We are proud to share the new Coaching Framework, which provides a refreshed syllabus to make the Coaching Award a more affordable, more accessible and more tailored qualification.

This pages contains info on upcoming courses as well as all information pertaining to the subsidies available listed at the bottom of the page.

What is the New Framework?

The Coaching Framework consists of one programme, five modules.

  1. Introduction to coaching
  2. Understanding Your Domain
  3. Understanding Learning & Development
  4. Coaching in Context
  5. Experiential Learning

The reason for the change is to create accessible entry points for new coaches to start learning discipline specific content straight away, as well as to engage coaches with a broader and deeper curriculum to reflect on.

Advantages of the New Framework

  • Accessible entry points so our new coaches can start learning in their discipline and environment straight away
  • A modular structure that links together which is more accessible, so you can build your knowledge and skills gradually over time
  • Threads of learning to support our coaches in key areas, such as working with disabled riders; women and girls; children and young people, according to the environment the coach is working in. For the first time, you will be supported in developing an understanding in these important topics, which will be recognised and recorded against your profile on the database
  • With us you’ll experience a person-centred approach to coaching which is more developmental
  • You'll be able to engage with a broader and deeper curriculum to reflect the role of the cycling coach and the demands of coaching

For Existing Coaches

There is no specific requirement to retrain or requalify, but we hope that our current coaches are excited by the new opportunities to continue their development in coaching. All existing qualifications will continue to be recognised as we transition into the new framework. The independent modules, that can be combined or taken as a standalone, offer a range of opportunities for you to develop your coaching practice as well as increasing remit and adding disciplines.

Funding

sportscotland Coach Education Subsidy

sportscotland’s Coaching Scotland framework sets out a vision where they will work together with governing bodies to create a workforce with greater diversity that is representative of the Scottish population.

sportscotland and Scottish Cycling have worked together to agree a new approach to coach/leadership education subsidy that supports this aim. The new approach is designed to be applied directly to British Cycling’s new Coach Education Framework.

This new approach has the following aims:

Build the capacity of coaches and leaders with a focus on inclusion.

Support and develop a more diverse workforce.

Ensure qualifications in Scotland are affordable and accessible.

Embed equality, diversity and inclusion through the education system in Scotland.

In line with Scottish Cycling strategy ‘Developing a Nation of Cyclists 2.0’, this iteration of subsidy will be aligned towards a select number of identified underrepresented groups in cycling across Scotland. Those from a rural location, coaches with a disability, coaches living in an area of deprivation, female coaches, and young coaches (under 25).
