Coaching in Context

The module supports coaches in developing a wider understanding of the discipline, exploring skill acquisition in context. Coaches will learn more technical and tactical aspects of the discipline as well as developing knowledge in planning, and the physical and psychological demands of the discipline. The learning experience will be both supportive and challenging, bringing coaches together to collaborate and create.

This is part of the Coach Award, but can be accessed as a standalone module for qualified coaches*

Who can access it?

Active qualified coaches who are curious and motivated to explore new ideas and develop their practice. There will be opportunities to share through discussion and a collaborative online space, really creating a community of coaching experience. What is involved?

The module is 8 weeks in duration with several components. There is some guided learning, and tutor will guide and support online seminars and your practical face-to-face days, to support you in applying your knowledge to the riders you coach, whether you are in a participation, development or performance domain. You will be required to deliver your own coaching in the discipline for a minimum of 4 hours throughout the 8 week course.

A summary of the components is below.

Guided e-learning units to introduce the discipline and develop knowledge in coaching approaches

  • Understanding the Discipline
  • Skill Acquisition
  • Coaching Process & Practice
  • Psychology
  • Physical demands
  • Planning in the discipline

There are two practical development days to explore skill acquisition, and coaches will have an opportunity to apply these in their own context. You will need to have access to coaching opportunities and riders for a minimum of 4 hours thoughout the 8 week course.

There are two seminars facilitated by a tutor, to support discussions and sense making from the practical coaching experiences, alongside a collaborative space online to share and discuss ideas and experiences.

What can I do when I complete the module?

You’ll develop a further confidence and competency as a coach in your discipline with the skill that is required of a sport coach.

You’ll have a broad technical / tactical remit (some restrictions for advanced skills as defined by the Coaching Guidelines, for which additional training will be required eg derny).

How will I be assessed?

Rather than completing an end-of-learning assessment task, we are using a more formative approach to assessment. There are activities and tasks to complete as you progress through the learning. Tutor will ensure that they check in with you throughout your learning experience to assess your level of competence and understanding.
