Off-road riding is one of the most popular and fastest growing disciplines of cycling. Introduction to Coaching off-road supports the foundation skills for off-road riding.


What can I do with the qualification?

As an Activity Coach in off-road you can support riders to development the fundamental techniques for any off-road disciplines.

What?

You will be qualified as an Activity Coach – Off-Road and can deliver coaching activities to develop foundation skills for riding in off-road environments, including body position, body movement, cornering, and weighting and unweighting the bike.

Where?

The terrain includes trails, parks and pump tracks. It should be rideable at walking speed and include rollable technical features. The area is no more than 10 minutes walk from emergency access.

Who?

Up to 8 riders on trails, or up to 20 riders in non-technical environments.

Requirements

Minimum age 14 years*
Independent coaching at 18 years
Coaching experience Not required, but it might be helpful if you have seen or been involved in some coaching activity, even in another sport.
Riding experience Experience of riding off road
Equipment A hardtail MTB or XC bike suitable for riding in a non-technical off-road environment. The bike should be in good working order.

You will also need a helmet.
First Aid It is good practice to hold a First Aid certificate, if you are coaching independently. If you wish to be covered by British Cycling Coaches insurance you will need an Emergency First Aid, however, if you are considering progressing to more advanced techniques in Coaching in Context, you will need a 2 Day Outdoor First Aid.

This course is the start of the pathway in off-road, and on completion you can then access Coaching in Context specific disciplines of Cyclocross or the MTB disciplines of XC or Gravity.

The full course cost is £185 for Introduction to Coaching - Off-Road.

Please note the course price will be increasing to £245 from January 2025.
