What is a motorcycle marshal?

The trained motorbike marshals group, National Escort Group (NEG), was formed to provide an accredited group of motorcyclists trained to assist with the safety of events held on the public highway by providing a safe route for competitors, indicating the direction of the race, and complementing static marshals.

Overview of responsibilities

  • British Cycling NEG members may be requested to assist with a cycling road race, either working with police motorcyclists in providing a safe route for competitors, or operating where there is no police cover by assisting with the direction of the race, and complementing static marshals.
  • In addition to providing a safe route for competitors, some NEG members may be engaged by the organiser to carry pillion passengers, such as other officials, medics, media or race service.

Benefits of being a motorcycle marshal

  • Free British Cycling membership which will give you exclusive benefits such as discounts at cycling stores, pre-sale and discounted tickets for major UK cycling events and a regular newsletter with exclusive offers, news and top tips (upon enrolment).
