The Marlow Red Kite Ride on Sunday August 31 has almost sold out. Only a few places remain before organisers reach the 600 rider limit that they have set for this year.

“We’re really pleased with the response we’ve had again and it looks like we will have another sell out event for 2014,” says Event Director Steve Tolmie.

Organisers, the Marlow Riders, have focused this year on improving the rider experience and have deliberately not increased the £25 entrance fee.

“Our aim is to exceed rider expectations. We could easily have increased our rider capacity but we decided first to consolidate on the feedback we received in the first two years of the event,” Tolmie adds.

“Despite such positive feedback last year we’ve again focused on great logistics and support to all the riders to make their day even more memorable. What better way to enjoy the brilliant scenery that the Chilterns have to offer other than by way of pedal power.”

Last year the event sold out all 600 places and so far the Red Kite Ride has received a 91.7% rating from feedback received from the first two years.

Year two improved the rating from year one and the Riders’ aim is for that to continue.

So, additional features this year include:

• A full rider times service with monitors at the finish line for participants to check the details of their ride.
• Motor bike mechanics to patrol the route and help any entrants in need of help
• All entrants will also receive a medal for completing their ride and a drinks bottle

Marlow Riders are particularly proud to be associated with their nominated charity this year Cyclists Fighting Cancer, who will receive all profits from the event.

“It’s particularly poignant for us as our club has sadly lost two of our members during the past year to cancer, and in some small way we can help some of the younger cancer sufferers in the community by supporting this really worthwhile charity,” adds Steve Tolmie.

Starting in the Thameside town of Marlow, the event offers riders a choice of three routes – 50, 80 and 100 miles – all three will enjoy some steady climbs in the Chilterns and flatter sections along the Thames Valley. The three routes are mainly on more minor rural roads through some of the most picturesque scenery the Chilterns has to offer.

Last year Course Director Willi Moore, a former Olympic bronze medallist, introduced a diversion through a 40 foot wide ford – the river Loddon – in the Berkshire village of Twyford. All three routes – 50, 80 and 100 miles – were directed through the ford.

This proved quite a talking point among riders who enjoyed the challenge of riding the ford without getting wet. And weather permitting, the ford will feature again.
