English raiders filled the top three places in Kennoway RC’s 82-mile Davie Campbell Memorial Road Race with first-year under-23 Harry Tanfield leading a 1-2 for the Herbalife-Leisure Lakes Bikes.com team.
The Middlesbrough-based 18-year-old came across the line a second clear of team-mate Tom Bustard to claim his first road win of the season with a further gap of nine seconds to Dillon Byrne (Champion System/Maxgear/Base), who outsprinted Scott McCrossan (Rock To Roll Cycles) for third place.
Strong winds took a toll on the 70-strong field over four laps of a tough circuit around the Cults Hills in Fife before the survivors turned on to the five-mile finishing circuit, covered twice, where they were then hit by a torrential downpour with only 42 riders making it to the end.
Tanfield was in the first break of the day that went away after eight miles, and by the end of the first big lap the leaders had increased to 13 with the rest slipping out of contention.
The leaders had been whittled down to eight going on to the finishing circuit where Bustard put the hammer down first time up the grinding Langside climb towards the finish area and split the group in half.
Bustard attacked again midway round the final lap with McCrossan leading the chase but unable to close the gap, and as the other pair tired, Tanfield took his chance and jumped across to his team-mate on his own before going on to win the sprint.
“It was a great team ride,” said Tanfield. “Tom gave me a bit of a lead out and I just kicked past him to take it.
“I did the Rutland last Sunday and I’m riding the Lincoln next weekend – I’m just trying to get into the big races this year and get some good results. I’ve not really ridden these distances before – it’s one thing doing National Bs, but doing 120-mile road races is another world.”
Callum Wilkinson (The Bicycleworks) won every prime at the top of Porters Brae to take the King of the Mountains award, eventually finishing sixth.
