Scottish Cycling is on the lookout for a new Head of Development to join it’s Senior Leadership Team and help shape the future of cycle sport in Scotland.
From participation to facilities, coaching to diversity, this exciting position covers a broad remit, that will offer challenge and reward in equal measure.
At Scottish Cycling, our mission is to inspire and support everyone to enjoy riding a bike and have the opportunity to realise their full potential. As the largest cycling membership organisation in Scotland, we are the voice of the sport, representing the aspirations of our community. Our strategic plan - Developing a Nation of Cyclists 2.0 - details our mission, vision and golden threads and outlines how we will continue the successful development of cycle sport in Scotland.
The Head of Development – Participation & Coaching - is a key post, working in tandem with our other Head of Development - Clubs & Events - and leadership team colleagues to develop cycling with a focus on the strategic development and implementation of the Growing Participation, Places to Ride & Coaching elements of our strategic plan.
The postholder will provide leadership, support and guidance to the Women & Girls Development Manager, Coaching Manager and Rock Up and Ride team, ensuring work priorities and impact are aligned directly to the strategic plan.
Another key element of the role will the leading the development and implementation of our forthcoming Women & Girls action plan, as we look to shift the dial on our efforts to get more females on bikes, whether that’s recreationally, for active travel, riding within our brilliant clubs or racing.
This vacancy comes about from the impending departure of Sophie McCall in May. Having started out as a Regional Development Officer in the North, Sophie has progressed over her nine years with the organisation, but it is in her current role as Head of Development where she has had most impact, helping to secure and deliver both Rock Up & Ride, and Ride The Worlds, the latter the official activation programme of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships.
Of her time with Scottish Cycling, Sophie said:
“I feel very privileged to have been a part of Scottish Cycling for a good number of years, and during a period of such incredible opportunity. I have had so many amazing opportunities that have shaped my career, instilled a life-long passion for cycling, and have given me the opportunity to work with some amazing people across both the staff and community. I am so proud to have been part of the wonderful Scottish Cycling team, and look forward to seeing the sport and the community continue to grow and achieve.”
A realignment of responsibilities will see Fraser Johnston take on responsibility for Events, a natural shift given his personal and professional experience in this space. Well known to the Scottish Cycling community, he most recently spearheaded the event delivery of the British Cyclocross Championships in Falkirk in a volunteer capacity. This new strand will complement his work in the Clubs space.
