Scott Contessa Epic's Beth Hayward took the overall victory in a gruelling Essex Giro Two-Day, a round of the Women’s National Road Race Series, in Essex.
The first year junior led after the opening day, and held on to the leader’s jersey to the end.
Hayward's teammate Anna Christian also held her second position from the previous day, but Mathilde Pauls slipped back to fourth with Anne Ewing moving up into third overall taking an all-important second place and three seconds in the second prime of the third stage.
Stage One, Individual Time Trial
Exeter Wheelers’ Mathilde Pauls set the fastest time in the individual time trial on Saturday on the opening stage of the Essex Giro Two-Day.
The second category rider completed the seven-mile Littlebury circuit in 18:15, riding Scott Contessa Epic’s Anna Christian into second place, eight seconds behind. Elizabeth Malins and overall series leader Anne Ewing finished equal third in 18:14.
Stage Two, Chapel Green Lane Kermesse (40 miles, eight laps)
Beth Hayward took a fine win on stage two, jumping away from the bunch in the closing metres to claim the second stage victory and put herself in the overall leaders jersey.
The Scott Contessa Epic youngster, who has just returned from a week long ODP training camp, played her cards just at the right time, holding off the pre-race favourites to take the chequered flag in the sprint.
The searing heat proved to be a decider for the majority of riders on a tough stage two with only 27 riders completing the eight laps.
A moderate pace on the opening lap kept the field pretty much together but the Chapel Green Lane climb up to the finish saw Hargroves’ Beth Crumpton and MG-Maxifuel's Hannah Barnes go to the front of the race and the pace increased causing a good number of riders to fall out of the back of the group.
Alexie Shaw suffered a mechanical on the back end of the circuit on the third lap but was brought back to the lead bunch by her team mates.
With time bonuses on offer the first prime on the third lap saw Anna Christian and Beth Hayward cross the line first and second respectively, Pauls took third and kept her challenge for the overall alive.
As the mid-way point of the race fast approached Christian made a play and jumped away from the front of the group, soon making a useful 15 seconds.
With her team sitting on the front of the bunch it could have been a gap that lasted but she was chased down and by the end of the fourth lap it was Crumpton again who was away on her own.
A jump across to Crumpton by Anne Ewing and Hayward looked useful but again the main field looked like they wanted the race to finish in a sprint and with BCC’s Elle Hopkins dragging the field along the breakaway didn't last.
A group of 22 started the final lap as one with Team BCC and Scott setting the pace, and coming up the climb to the finish line it was Hayward who had the better of the field taking the win by two seconds from a charging Charline Joiner who took second and Anna Christian who claimed third.
Stage Three, Wimbush Circuit, 79 miles
Karla Boddy took an unexpected win on stage three after another gruelling 79 miles round the lanes of Essex. A race full of action and a road closure after a serious accident that saw two riders taken to hospital.
With another promise of high temperatures on the cards the day’s stage looked as though it was going to be a long drawn out roll around the leafy lanes, but an early break saw Helen Ralston, Alexie Shaw (both Les Filles RT), Tracy Corbett (London Dynamo) and GB Cycles Hayley Simmonds ride away from the field on the opening lap, the four soon gaining a forty second lead over the field.
A touch of wheels in the field saw MG Maxifuel's Hayley Edwards and Abergavenny's Lowri Devey come off the worst of five riders who crashed going through Great Sampford, and both riders were taken to hospital.
With the field having lost their momentum the break soon increased the gap, the four working well together and looked a serious threat to finish the race in front.
The race was slowed passing the crash site but the decision was made on the third lap to close the road and stop the race while the injured were evacuated. The race was reduced by some 11.5 miles, the break of four starting 1:26 ahead of the race after a 45 minute delay and completing the lap with a prime, which was won by Shaw.
Breast Cancer Care started to organise themselves at the front and soon had brought the gap down to 58 seconds. With two laps to go the break was down to three, Simmonds dropping back to the main field, the field now within 50 metres of the break, a break that was all but over and climbing up the twisty rise to the take the second prime and the bell was Scott Contessa's Laura Wasley and BCC's Anne Ewing, taking the important three second bonus.
The final lap saw the race step up a gear, Maine Filby (Xcracer.com) started to wind the speed up then Hannah Barnes took to the front for a hard seven miles, lining up the sprint for the MG-Maxifuel team, and coming around the final bend it was Karla Boddy who had the legs to take the win.
