After spending 50 miles alone at the front of the race, Giles Drake secured victory in The Pete’s Race in West Yorkshire on Sunday.
The 29-year-old Wirral rider was around 30 seconds clear of the chasing pack at the end of the 90-mile race after having attacked alone on the third of six laps.
He is clearly a rider in form at the moment, having won overall in the Holme Valley Wheelers stage race recently.
Drake attacked at the top of a hill having gone for a prime win, but he continued his effort and quickly escaped. As the bell sounded word got back to Drake that a chase group had clipped off the front of the bunch, and although they closed him down but he did just enough to hold on and take the win.
“I was swinging at the end!” he said afterwards. “Having done 50 miles on my own I was finished, but I managed to hold on for the win.
“It’s nice to get a win. I won the Holme Valley Wheelers stage race a couple of weeks ago, but I was second on both stages, so it’s good to get a chance to cross the line with my arms in the air!”
Metaltek’s David McGowan won the race for second spot, the 32-year-old Liverpool rider just holding off Wilson’s Wheels rival David Shackleton, from Hull.
