Stage three (Fair City Criterium)
Hannah Barnes took the glory in the final stage of the Women’s Tour of Perth, a round of the British Cycling Women’s National Road Race Series, on Sunday.
But her win wasn't enough to take the overall victory from Anne Ewing whose Breast Cancer Care team worked well to protect their race leader. The MG-Maxifuel rider set out her stall from the gun and with the rest of her team were always present at the head of the main group.
Fifty minutes and five laps of a very greasy 1.1km circuit saw a good number of riders dropped by the midway point, the cold and the rain affecting many.
Both Breast Cancer Care and MG-Maxifuel dominated the lead group, BCC had six riders in the first ten places and were protecting overall leader Ewing but Barnes wearing the green jersey had to go for time bonuses in the sprints if she had any chance of pulling a six second deficit back from the previous day.
Amy Gornall looked to be riding the circuit well, The Scott-Contessa rider mixed things up throughout the race and was dictating the pace on the early laps.
With the opening thirty minutes pretty much settled it was Barnes's team mate, Charline Joiner who moved up to head the main group and with Louise Borthwick on her wheel picked the pace up, BCC reacted and kept the group together taking Ewing and Roe to take a 1-2 in the final sprint from Barnes third.
With the final five laps remaining Joiner again got on the front and with Karla Boddy upped the pace, again Gornall was towards the front, Penny Rowson moved up with the remaining BCC riders to keep Ewing in the mix.
With four laps to go, again, Joiner and Boddy were heading the race with Barnes on their wheels, with the speed increasing it was probably inevitable there would be a crash on the slippy surface and with three laps remaining BCC's Ciara Horne clipped a barrier leg and ripped her front tyre resulting in a nasty fall and a suspected broken elbow.
Team mate Jane Barr was also held up in the crash, which increased Barnes’s chances of the win and the three MG girls started the penultimate lap on the front with a line of remaining riders along the finish straight, with the bell ringing and Boddy slipping back it would be down to Joiner to hang on to the front to take the green jersey to the line and coming out of the bottom corner the group was still together but Barnes sprinted from the middle of the bunch to cross the line ahead of Ewing and Roe to take the win
Stage two, Strathallan Time Trial
Eileen Roe took the win on a short but technical circuit in the grounds of the Strathallan School on Saturday evening.
The Breast Cancer Care rider completed the 0.94 mile course in 3.27, four seconds ahead of Hannah Barnes and six seconds faster than overall race leader Anne Ewing.
Pre-race favourite and time trial specialist Ciara Horne didn't ride to expectations, crossing the line some 16 seconds off the winning time and dropping to fourth place overall.
Stage one
Anne Ewing took the win on the first stage of the City Of Perth Women’s GP, a round of the British Cycling Women’s National Road Race Series on Saturday.
The Breast Cancer Care rider escaped with team mate Ciara Horne on the long climb towards Ochil on the final lap of ten to claim the leaders jersey in a time of 1:58.30. Hannah Barnes outpaced the main bunch to take third spot just seven seconds off the race winners time.
Early action saw Kelly Moore crash out of the race after hitting a fallen rider on a grit strewn descent leaving the MG-Maxifuel rider nowhere to go but to the paramedics car.
As expected strong riding by the likes of MG, Scott-Contessa and Breast Cancer care teams soon shaped the race and a turn of speed soon had a good number of the field searching for some extra leg speed.
With a main bunch of around half the field the opening six laps of the 6.6 kilometre Forteviet circuit didn't throw up any real attacks from anyone but it was Scott Contessa's Alice Cobb who tried for a lone attack with four to go but MG and Breast Cancer Care were soon on top of things and pulled the rider back to the group.
With three laps remaining Elinor Thorogood made the jump and got a useful looking twenty seconds on the main group but the attack proved unfruitful and the MG girls reeled the rider back in.
It was the penultimate lap that saw the bunch twitch, coming into the small village of Forteviot Eileen Roe went for the lone ride but once again the bunch were on top of things and the attack was quashed.
A group of four counterattacked, Kayleigh Brogan, Katie Archibald, Hannah Barnes and Amy Gornall went for glory and looked as though they could stay away but as the race approached the bell Breast Cancer Care had organised the chase down and the field started its final lap as one.
It was at the foot of the final Jackchairs Wood climb that Ewing and Horne upped the pace and with the rest of their team dictating the bunch it would be a time trial run in to take the chequered flag and a Breast Cancer Care 1-2.

Stage one winner Anne Ewing said: “The plan today was to bring back any moves but nothing seemed to stick for most of the race so I went to the front of the bunch to try and get our sprinters in the right place for the finish.
“Everyone in the big group were looking really strong and the climb didn't seem to be troubling anyone so to get away when we did really worked well, the team had good communication today. We have the time trial tonight and the crit on Sunday but this result is a pretty good start for the team.”
