Olympic Development Programme junior Matt Gibson (Velocity WD40) came home alone to record his first win of the season in the 65-km Merseyside Wheelers road race on the Pimbo circuit.

The Lymm-based rider, who was scheduled to compete in the weather-hit Cadence round of the National Junior Series, dominated the race in a break with Sam Jackson and his own team-mate Andy Leigh before going clear in the closing stages to finish 19 seconds clear.

Frank Pilkington (Bill Nickson Cycles) led in the rest some three minutes down on Gibson to take fourth place.
