Matt Kipling of Velo29-Black Hawk prevailed in grim conditions as he outsprinted the bunch to finish the Wansbeck CC Australian Pursuit Race first.
After a morning of torrential rain in Longhirst, Northumberland, the course had mostly drained although there was still plenty of water and red flags had to be placed to warn the riders of potholes.
The riders took extra care around the circuit and although there were no major problems, the tough race saw only 35 of the 62 starters complete.
Although the field broke up slightly by the end of the fifth lap, it came back together in the final lap and this resulted in a mass bunch sprint with nobody getting away.
It was Kipling who was the strongest come the finish line and he took victory from Metaltek’s Adam Martin and Velo29-Black Hawk team mate James Alder.
