The penultimate event of the Graham Weigh Cycles Series for 2012 saw Rhyl CC's Gerallt Allen's winning streak brought to an end, by just half a wheel. Wednesday night's racing in pleasant conditions was Dan Whelan's joy as the North West Onimpex-Bioracer rider made the winning move after 30 minutes of the 50 minute plus five laps main race.
With the company of Allen, three times winner in 2012 Tom Black (Cycle Premier-Kovert), and highly experienced Nick Giles (Fibrax Wrexham RC) it was always looking good for staying away, and with a few allies in the pack the lead grew to 1-27 over the bunch by the finish.
Giles, putting up a sterling performance despite a combined age of nearly the same as the other three, cracked three laps out, and then 16 year old Allen dipped his head for the line 1000 metres out, losing Black but Whelan was a tougher proposition. Slowly the gap came down approching the finishing straight, and with 200 to go the 18 year old was at Allen's side, and Whelan proved to have the little bit extra in the kick for the line for his fourth win of the 2012 campaign.
In an excellent field for a midweek race of 29 youth riders, Robert Rogers (Birkenhead North End CC) secured the club's fourth consecutive win in the Youth A race as a break of five dominated, Joe Barnwell (CBM Dyffryn Conwy) outsprinted Rhyl duo David Tudor and Morgan Hughes in the Youth B and prolific winner SolKerfoot-Robson (Rhos-On-Sea CC) came good again in the Youth C.
