Joe Moses was the overall winner of Isle of Man Youth Tour, winning the junior category ahead of Jochum Buchener with Joe Kirkham completing the top three.
Stage three report (Juniors)
Planet X rider Jacob Scott from Holmfirth in Yorkshire won the third and final junior stage in the Sleepwell Hotels Isle of Man Youth and Junior Tour, sprinting clear of his six breakaway rivals at the end of a 92-kilometre road race around Ramsey.
The 16-year-old held off Dutch rider Jochum Buchener (Sleepwell Hotels) for the win, while Sportscover’s Joe Moses, 18 and from Bradford, took third spot.
The 102km race comprised six laps of a circuit on the east coast of the Island taking in Ramsey, Bride and Andreas. Stage two winner Sebastian Baylis (Mid Devon CC) started the race in the yellow jersey with a 12-second advantage over Stuart McCluskey (Leslie Bike Shop) and 13 seconds over Dutchman Jorrit Lind (Sleepwell Hotels/Viking Waterland) who was third on GC. But the first 20 riders on GC started the final stage within 40 seconds of the race leader so there was plenty to race for.
Matt Flynn (Mountivation) launched the first significant attack and had built up a maximum lead of around two minutes. But he was caught by the peloton with three laps to go and on the climb to Bride - the only real climb on the course - three riders launched the move that was to decide the race.
Josh Knights (Mountivation) Callum Ferguson (Halesowen A&CC) and Joe Kirkham (Hargroves Cycles) went clear but were soon joined by four other riders - British National Junior Road Race Champion Dan Pearson (Wilier/Live To Ride), plus Scott, Buchener, and Moses.
As the early morning sunshine gave way to dark clouds and rain the seven escapees rapidly increased their advantage to over a minute while Baylis - who had no team mates in the field - could feel the yellow jersey being ripped off his back. Moses, who had started the day in 10th place and 30 seconds off yellow - was the highest placed GC rider in the break and had the most to gain.
After completing six laps of the course the leaders turned onto the finishing straight on Ramsey seafront and it was Scott who won the sprint. GC results were still to be confirmed at the time of writing, but it is believed that Moses gained enough time on stage 3 to take the overall victory.
Stage three report (youth)
Matthew Davies (Team Royal London 360) won a thrilling Stage Three race in the Youth A Boys category.
He was part of a three man breakaway along with Alexander Braybrooke (Velocity Race Team) and Danny Fox (Solihull CC) who held off a determined chase led by Fabian Brennan (Velocity Race Team). Brennan was hoping to defend his yellow jersey but he had only a three second lead over Fox going into the final stage. Braybrooke finished second on the stage and Fox’s third place was enough for him to take overall victory. On GC Fox was 15 seconds ahead of Brennan in second, and 18 seconds clear of Braybrooke in third.
Elizabeth Holden (Team Royal London 360) defended her pink jersey in the Youth A Girls category. Holden, who had won Friday’s prologue time trial and Saturday’s road race stage at Ellerslie, was second on the third and final stage finishing 43 seconds behind Manon Lloyd (Towy Riders). Sophie Black (Team Royal London 360) was third on the stage 1m 10s behind Lloyd. On GC Holden was 47 seconds ahead of Martha Gill (Bolton Hot Wheels CC) in second and 3m 20s ahead of Lloyd in third.
Daniel Tulett (Hargroves Cycles) defended his yellow jersey by winning the third stage in the Youth B Boys category. He outsprinted Peter Kibble (Cycology Bikes) who was second and Reece Wood (Velocity Race Team) who was third. On GC Tulett finished 13 seconds ahead of Kibble, and 39 seconds ahead of third placed Owen Dudley (Team Royal London 360).
Jessica Roberts (Towy Riders) made it three out of three stage wins in the Youth B Girls category winning the third stage ahead of Henrietta Colborne (Beacon Wheelers) and Sophie Williams (Cardiff JIF). On GC Roberts was 4m 32s clear of Colborne and 8m 32s ahead of third placed Lauren Murphy (Team Milton Keynes).
In the Youth C Boys Matthew Shaw (Solihull CC) tried his best to defend a one second lead in the GC standings but lost the jersey to William Draper (Team Royal London 360) who had started the stage in second place overall.
Draper won the stage by outsprinting Matthew Lewis (Wolverhampton Wheelers). They were given the same time with third placed Jack Ford (Wakefield Junior Triathlon Club) just one second behind. Shaw finished sixth on the stage, 12 seconds behind the stage winner.
The final GC standings saw Draper on the top step of the podium 20 seconds ahead of Shaw and 24 seconds ahead of Daniel Gibson (Liverpool Century RC) in third.
Lucy Nelson (Halesowen A&CC) won stage three of the Youth C Girls category finishing 1m 27s ahead of Emily Bridson (Team Royal London 360) and 2m 52s clear of Chloe Crellin (Team Royal London 360. It completed a hat-trick of stage wins for Nelson in this year’s Youth Tour. On GC Nelson was 2 minutes ahead of Bridson in second and 8m 48s ahead of Crellin in third.
Matti Egglestone (Beacon Wheelers) made it a hat-trick of stage wins in the Youth D Boys category winning stage 3 ahead of Percy Hampton (Team Royal London 360) and Charlie Gibson (Team Royal London 360). On GC Egglestone finished 16 seconds ahead of Gibson in second, and 22 seconds ahead of Tyler Koch (Bolton Hot Wheels CC).
Josie Nelson (Halesowen A&CC) won stage three of the Youth D Girls category with Charlie Moss (Team Royal London 360) in second and Darcy Cain (Team Royal London 360) third. On GC Nelson won finishing the tour 57s ahead of Moss and 1m 35s clear of Blae Cain (Team Royal London 360).
Joshua Turling won all three races in the Youth E Boys category taking the third stage ahead of Team Royal London 360 riders Zachary Walker and Dillon Dowson. On GC Turling was 2m 19s ahead of second placed Walker and 2m 37s ahead of third placed Dowson.
In the third stage of the Youth E Girls category Chloe Comaish (Team Royal London 360 won by 1m 21s from her team mate Mairi Harrison. Esther Wong (Salt Ayre Cog Set) was third 2m 3s behind the stage winner. On GC Comaish was one minute ahead of Harrison in second and 3m 10s ahead of Chloe Dillon (Team Royal London 360) in third.
Stage two report (Juniors)
Sebastian Baylis (Mid Devon CC) won the second stage in the junior category of the Sleepwell Hotels Isle of Man Youth Tour which was on a hilly circuit around Peel on the west coast of the Island.
Stuart McCluskey (Team Leslie Bike Shop) was second around 7 seconds behind, and Jorrit Lind (Sleepwell Hotels/Viking Waterland RT) third around 12 seconds behind the winner.
Overnight leader Baylis gained a 10s time bonus for winning the stage and finished two seconds ahead of McCluskey in yesterday’s prologue and was only three seconds behind Lind in the prologue. Jacob Ragan (Champion Systems/Maxgear/Kyklos) won the prologue but finished around 18s behind Baylis today.
Stage two in the junior race covered 11 laps of a circuit which included the short but steep ascent of the Switchback - a total distance of 102km. There were a few short-lived breakaways in the first few laps. Harry Godding (PM Racing) and James Knox (Mountivation) attacked on the first lap and gained around 15 seconds before being reeled in. Godding attacked again on the next lap but he and several other escapees were chased down.
Eventual winner Baylis was in a six man breakaway which went clear with 5 laps remaining. With him were Joe Kirkham (Hargroves Cycles), Joe Moses (Sportscover/Altura RT), Craig Wallace (Granite City RC), Chris Latham (Champion Systems/Maxgear/Kyklos) and Dutchman Marco Doets (Sleepwell Hotels/Viking Waterland RT).
With four laps left this group was joined by National Junior Champion Dan Pearson (Wilier/Live To Ride), Dutchman Jochum Buchener (Sleepwell Hotels/Viking Waterland RT), and Sam Williams (NFTO). Williams was particularly aggressive on the climb of the Switchback climb and was stretching the breakaways every time he put in a dig as the leaders approached the start/finish line at the top of the climb.
With three laps the lead group’s advantage over the peloton peaked at around 1m 30s, and they still held just over one minute with two laps to go.
A determined chase by what remained of the peloton as the race headed over the top of the Switchback and down into Peel cut the deficit rapidly. As the race approached the bell at the top of the Switchback the breakaways had been caught and around 30 riders headed off on the last lap.
Baylis went clear with McCluskey and Joe Kirkham (Hargroves Cycles) on a short climb along the coast road into Peel. He made his winning move at the bottom of the Switchback to claim a deserved stage win.
The third and final stage in the junior category is a 92km road race around Ramsey on the east coast of the Island tomorrow (Sunday May 6) morning.
Stage two report (Youth)
Fabian Brennan (Velocity Race Team) won the second stage in the Youth A Boys category race after winning a sprint finish at the end of a hilly 33.6km race around a closed road circuit at Ellerslie.
The course for the youth riders is widely viewed as tougher than the Peel course used by Saturday morning’s stage two race for juniorsand the youth riders faced a tough test with an uphill finish. Brennan outsprinted Danny Fox (Solihull CC) with Jamie Dudley (Team Royal London 360 A) four seconds back in third.
On GC Brennan goes into Sunday’s third and final stage with just a three second lead over Fox with Dudley nine seconds off the yellow jersey. Behind them are another seven riders within 30s of the leader so there the overall victory is still up for grabs in the 33.6km final stage in Ramsey.
In the Youth B Boys stage two Daniel Tullett (Hargroves Cycles) won the 19.2km race by nine seconds from Peter Kibble (Cycology Bikes) with Owen Dudley (Team Royal London 360 A) in third 17 seconds behind the stage winner. On GC Tulett leads Kibble by 10 seconds with Dudley in third 24 seconds behind the leader.
William Draper (Team Royal London 360 A) gave the local fans plenty to cheer by winning the 12km Youth C Boys stage two race just beating Matthew Shaw (Solihull CC) on the line. Daniel GIbson (Liverpool Century RC) was equal third with Toby Tanfield (Cleveland Wheelers CC) - both riders finishing eight seconds behind the winner. Shaw leads on GC with William Draper (Team Royal London 360 A) just one second behind and Gibson third 14 seconds behind the yellow jersey.
Matti Egglestone (Beacon Wheelers) won the Youth D Boys race ahead of Charlie Gibson (Team Royal London 360 A) and Tyler Koch (Bolton Hot Wheels CC). Top three on GC are 1st - Eggleston, 2nd - Gibson @ 8s, 3rd - Koch @ 11s.
Joshua Tarling (West Wales Cycle Racing) won the Youth E Boys race with Zachary Walker (Team Royal London 360 A) second and Dillon Dowson (Team Royal London 360 A) in third. Top three on GC are 1st - Tarling, 2nd - Walker @ 1m 16s, 3rd - Dowson @ 1m 23s.
Elizabeth Holden (Team Royal London 360 A), daughter of former Falcon Banana pro rider and twice British Criterium Champion Rob Holden, won the Youth A Girls race to make it two stage wins out of two after she won yesterday’s prologue time-trial.
She made sure of holding on to her leader’s pink jersey and won stage two by finishing two seconds ahead of Martha Gill (Bolton Hot Wheels CC) in second and 3m 59s ahead of third placed Manon Lloyd (Towy Riders). Holden holds a 12 second lead on GC with Gill second and Lloyd third at 4m 46s.
The Youth B Girls race was won by Jessica Roberts (Towy Riders) with Henrietta Colborne (Beacon Wheelers) second and Lauren Murphy (Team Milton Keynes) third. Roberts has a commanding lead on GC with a 3m 35s advantage over Colborne, and a 7m 10s lead over third placed Murphy.
Lucy Nelson (Halesowen A&CC) won the Youth C Girls race. Emily Bridson (Team Royal London 360 A) was second and Chloe Crellin ((Team Royal London 360 A) third. Top three on GC are 1st - Nelson, 2nd - Bridson @ 30s, 3rd Crellin @ 5m 51s.
In the Youth D Girls event Charlie Moss ((Team Royal London 360 A) won, with Josie Nelson (Halesowen A&CC) second, and Blae Cain (Team Royal London 360 A) third. Top three on GC are 1st - Nelson, 2nd - Moss @8s, 3rd - Cain @ 40s.
Mairi Harrison (Team Royal London 360 A) won the Youth E Girls race, Chloe Comaish (Team Royal London 360 A) second, and Chloe Dillon (Team Royal London 360 A) third. Top three on GC are 1st - Harrison, 2nd - Comaish @ 24s, 3rd - Dillon @ 54s.
The third and final stages of the youth category races are on a circuit along Ramsey seafront on Sunday afternoon. Youth D&E riders will race over 7.2km; Youth C 12km; Youth A&B girls 19.2km; Youth B 19.2km; and Youth A 33.6km.
Stage one report
Jacob Ragan (Champion System/Maxgear/Kyklos) won the prologue time-trial in the junior category of the Sleepwell Hotels Isle of Man Youth Tour.
The opening stage of this year’s tour was a 1.29km test on an out and back course along Douglas Promenade and conditions were cool but dry and there was little wind to hamper the riders. Ragan clocked 1m 44s just a fraction of a second ahead of his team mate Chris Latham who was given the same time. Third was Harry Tanfield (Wallis Cycles/CHH RT) in 1m 45s.
The home crowd had something to cheer as Jake Kelly (Team Microgaming-Isle of Man) came home in fourth ahead of Dutchman Jeroen Smits (Sleepwell Hotels/Viking Waterland RT) in fifth and William Thomas (Velo Race Team) in sixth. All three riders clocked 1m 46s.
An overnight frost is predicted but the parcours for the 102km race on a circuit around Peel for Saturday morning’s second stage on the west coast of the Island is sure to generate plenty of heat from the off. In previous years the stage has proved decisive in determining the challengers for overall victory.
The riders will complete 11 laps of a circuit which starts and finishes at the top of the Switchback climb - a short but steep ascent which usually proves to be a springboard for a race winning attack. Time bonuses may also come into play in the GC standings with 10s for first place, 7s for second, 5s for third, 3s for fourth, 2s for fifth and 1s for sixth. The time bonuses apply to the two road races stages only, and not for the prologue time-trial.
Stage two may also be complicated by a new roundabout on the road in to Peel which has rough and uneven tarmac and will be an extra hazard for the riders to look out for. The third and final stage in the junior category is on Sunday (May 6) - a 92km road race around Ramsey on the east coast of the Island and finishing on the seafront.
Friday’s opening stage was the same distance and run on the same course for 60 junior riders and 157 riders in the youth categories. Ricky Parsons (One and All Cycling/Bike Chain/Ricci) won the Youth A Boys race in 1m50s; Peter Kibble (Cycology Bikes) won the Youth B Boys race in 1m 55s; Matthew Shaw (Solihull CC) was the Youth C Boys winner in 2m 10s; Matti Egglestone (Beacon Wheelers) won the Youth D Boys race in 2m 24s; and Joshua Tarling (West Wales Cycle Racing) won the Youth E Boys race in 2m 28s.
In the girls’ categories Elizabeth Holden (Team Royal London 360 Isle of Man) won the Youth A category in 2m 2s; Jessica Roberts (Towy Riders) won the Youth B race in 2m 1s; Lucy Nelson (Halesowen A&CC) won the Youth C race in 2m 17s; Josie Nelson (Halesowen A&CC) won the Youth D race in 2m 32s; and Mairi Harrison (Team Royal London 360 Isle of Man) won the Youth E race in 3m 9s.
