London Dynamo’s Jamie Pine secured another victory in the Imperial Winter Series at Hillingdon, winning round nine to boost his lead in the series.
Twickenham-based Pine now leads the series by 290 points with three races left, and while the 34-year-old could still be caught by a number of other riders, it would take a massive turnaround in fortunes to deny him the title.
“The way he’s riding I can’t see anybody being able to catch him,” said event organiser Doug Collins. “The way he attacked today, he looked very strong and nobody could really go with him.”
Second overall and his rival for the series, Steve Golla (High Wycombe CC) had to settle for fourth spot today, while Felt Colbornes rider Tom Smith taking second, the 35-year-old Bracknell man crossing the line around two seconds behind Pine while Southwark’s Ben Moores (Norwood Paragon CC) was another three seconds behind in third.
A stiff north westerly wind blew across the course, and really separated the men from the boys with the 43-strong bunch splitting quite quickly.
After a few early skirmishes failed to get away, the decisive move came after 35 kilometres when Golla, Smith, Andy Betts (Felt Colbornes) and Moores went clear. Although Pine missed the initial break, he quickly bridged the gap along with several other riders.
The leading group swelled to 12 riders, but the pace and the wind soon whittled it down to eight who stayed clear of the chasers. But in the gallop for the line Pine took a relatively easy win.
Isleworth’s Jacek Reder won the third category race, the 35-year-old unattached rider holding off Werner van der Merve (Marathon MTB.com), while 19-year-old Reading CC rider Stuart Williams was top in the fourth cat race.
