Visitor Davis Victorious in Hertfordshire
Paul Simon Homes Road Race (Finchley RT), 12 June 2011
Whitwell, Hertfordshire
Report: Snowdon Sports
SHEFFIELD rider Oliver Davis made the most of his 300-mile round trip to Hertfordshire when he took victory in the Paul Simon Homes Road Race at Whitwell in Hertfordshire on Sunday.
Dinnington RC rider Davis won the event, promoted by Finchley RT, after a bunch sprint at the end of a wet and cold morning which led to more than half the field failing to finish the 72-mile race.
A group of five riders broke away early in the race and stayed clear for around 50 miles, and they received a boost when a horse box pulled onto the circuit between the leaders and the bunch, holding up the chasers.
Next time around, a fragile 30 second lead had turned into nearly two minutes. But the bunch was galvanized by the unscheduled stop and started eating into the deficit, eventually catching the break on the seventh of eight laps of a nine-mile circuit.
And in the gallop for the line Davis took the win from St Ives CC's Malcolm Smith, while East London Velo's Darren Cainey took third.
