Isle of Man Youth League #2
Tuesday, April 20, 2010 | by Dot Tilbury
Over 300 competitors contested round 2 of Team Royal London 360 Isle of Man's youth league, staged at the NSC last Tuesday night in sunny but cold conditions. Edward Teare won the novices class, crossing the line well ahead of leading girl Sophia Littlewood, who outsprinted Harvey Coole for the runners-up spot. Sam Cunningham was a lonely fourth and Donal Hensman got the better of Luca Moretta and Emma Stratford in the battle for fifth. Mia Littlewood and Oliver Corkish were eighth and ninth, with Ryan Blair leading the chasing bunch home for tenth.
In the born 2005 and later age group Niall Colquitt took the honours from Harry Kneen. Round one winner Aaron Christian was third and Mairi Harrison the top girl in fourth spot. Thomas Ross and Nathan Cannell completed the top six.
Zac Walker gained the upper hand on breakaway partner Dillon Dowson in the fight for the top spot in the born 2004 category. Joshua Dudley put in a fast last lap to snatch third from James Devereau, while Cameron Dudley managed to stay clear of pursuers Cian Gell and Haydn Harris to claim fifth. Harvey Lawrence was a safe eighth and newcomer Harry Whitehouse made an impressive NSC debut by taking the eight strong bunch sprint for ninth.
A group of four riders escaped on the opening lap of the born 2003 event and were never caught. Matthew Black got away from his three companions on the final circuit to secure the victory, with Jonty Bregazzi getting the better of Percy Hampton and Jake Wilson in the gallop for second. Thomas Skillicorn led the main chasing group home for fifth, one place in front of first girl Darcy Cain.
Repeating the tactics which proved successful in the previous round, Charlie Gibson went from the gun in the born 2002 race and left the rest of the field in his wake to fight over the minor placings. The ever improving Will Corkill was a solid second and Aaron Lund third just ahead of James Harrison and Jack Whitelegg. The consistent Sam Corlett was sixth and Caitlin Christian took the girls' prize in seventh position.
Max Walker controlled the Born 2001 three lapper from the front, taking the chequered flag with a clear advantage over Tyler Cain, who was a comfortable second. Juan Kneen got away from Matthew Flint and Emma Draper (1st girl) to grab the final place on the podium and Cullen Gell ousted Conor Gelling for sixth. Rory Donegan led Chris Moore and Chloe Crellin home for eighth place.
The outcome of the born 2000 class was fought out between a leading group of eight riders, with Ben Christian eventually edging out Thomas Bostock for the number one spot. Luke Murray was third followed by Sam Batey, Adam Kelly, Tom Murray, Lucas Mudie and Joseph Corkish. Ninth placed Adam Long was the best of the rest and Ciara Sowerby picked up the girls' award in 13th spot.
Matthew Draper had to shake off strong challenges from Breeshey Cain and Sophie Black before cruising to a fine solo victory in the born 1999-97 grouping. Marcus Simpson pipped Rory McCann and Phoebe Ferguson for fourth, leaving Holly Black in their wheel tracks to salvage seventh. Amy Kinley spearheaded the next group in for eighth, giving the girls five out of the top ten placings.
In the very well supported under 12's racing bikes four riders broke free and stayed clear to the finish where Matthew Draper took the final sprint to complete his second success of the night. Owen Dudley held off Michael Moss and Conor Davies for the runners-up spot, with Callum Clague heading William Draper and Dan Watterson across the line for fifth. Tenth placed Eleanor Davies had a close tussle with Kaitlin Slack for the girls' spoils.
The in form Joshua Knights won the under 16's race from Jake Kelly and Alex Haddock. Chasers Leon Mazzone and Nicholas Corlett failed to make contact with the three frontrunners and had to settle for fourth and five respectively. Eleanor Stokoe was the best girl in 12th spot and newcomer Matt Clague did well to finish 14th in his first outing.
