Tom Ward and Frank Longstaff won the National Open Madison Championships in an exciting finish, while Adam Yates took the GC win in the Tour de Suisse and Tahnee Seagrave secured her first downhill world cup win in three years.

National Open Madison Championships

Tom Ward and Frank Longstaff secured the national title at the National Open Madison Championships at Lee Valley VeloPark.

Ward and Longstaff (Ward Performance Race Team) had stiff competition from TEKKERZ riders, Alec Briggs and Joe Holt, and junior riders Will Gilbank and James Ambrose-Parish.

Briggs and Holt came out swinging, looking the more dominant pair in the opening part of the race, but Ward and Longstaff kept calm to stay within reach of them. Fresh off claiming the national derny title last month and his elimination race win at the UCI South London Grand Prix earlier in the week, Briggs was gunning to take another title, but a last gasp effort from the WardPerformance pair saw them seize the title in a tie break. Gilbank and Ambrose-Parish claimed third in a commendable ride.

Having had three top five placings and a bronze medal in 2018, Ward’s Instagram post said:

“Frank is absolutely great both on and off the bike. We gelled together straight away and our strengths and weaknesses compliment each other. Super proud that we did it in Ward Performance Race Team colours.”

CAMS Yorkshire Classic

Seb Grindley (Fensham Howes - MAS Design) and Abigail Miller (Toufati Eveyon Active) stormed to the wins at the CAMS Yorkshire Classic.

The junior open race saw two riders kick off the racing with attacks off the front, before a group worked together to bridge over on the third lap of seven. Grindley launched a fantastic attack, with Joshua Jackson (Toufati Everyone Action) and Max Hinds (Fensham Howes - MAS Design) going with him to create a powerful breakaway. The chasing group continued to put in frequent surges, but were unable to chase down the dominante trio. On the final climb, Grindley timed his attack to perfection, and took the win clear of the two others, with Jackson taking second and teammate Hinds securing third.

Miller went clear with a group early on in the junior and under-23 women's race, using her knowledge of the home roads to her advantage. The group managed to stay away for the entire race, with Miller outsprinting Shibden Apex's Ruby Oakes and Arabella Blackburn to the win.

UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, Val di Sole

Tahnee Seagrave conquered Val di Sole’s Black Snake track to take the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup downhill win on Saturday.

Seagrave celebrated her 29th birthday in style to storm to her first world cup win in three years, clocking a time of 4:31.471 to win with less than a second separating the top three.

Also in Val di Sole, Great Britain Cycling Team’s under-23 riders competed in the cross-country races, with Ella Maclean Howell scoring the top result with sixth in the short track cross-country, before taking 10th in the Olympic race. Max Greensill and Corran Carrick-Anderson competed in the men’s under-23 race, with both putting in competitive performances.

British riders Cameron Orr and Charlie Aldridge finished 37th and 48th , respectively, while Evie Richards finished 29th and Isla Short came home 48th in the elite short track races.

UCI South London Grand Prix

Two days of epic track racing at Herne Hill Veldrome saw wins for Briggs, Cat Ferguson, Will Perrett and Ella Barnwell at the UCI South London Grand Prix.

Tour de Suisse

Adam Yates took the overall victory of the Tour de Suisse over the weekend to win his second ever WorldTour stage race.

Yates rounded off the eight-stage race with a final uphill battle in a hilly time-trial, finishing nine seconds behind UAE Team Emirates teammate and GC rival Joao Almedia. But his wins on stages five and seven were enough to secure the British rider the overall win by 22 seconds, also winning the points and King of the Mountain classifications in the process.

INEOS Grenadiers Tom Pidcock claimed fifth in the GC, while youngsters Oscar Onley (Team dsm-Firmenlich PostNL) finished 10th.
