Midseason Comeback
Well what a season so far. We are at the halfway point now and things can only get better!
Here is a recap of my season so far:
Rode unbeaten at the first Fourcross National until the final when I crashed after hitting a rock that was covered in the muddy conditions! Didn't get at all disheartened because I had some really good speed. This speed was there again at the first Euro Fourcross Series round in Prague. Fourth in qualifying and ninth in the race was a pretty solid top ten start to the year. From there I went to the first World Cup in Houffalize. It was a bad couple of weeks in the run up to this as I had a bad dose of viral gastroenteritis and lost just under a stone in weight before leaving for the race! Anyway, I rode relaxed and smart all night and came away with sixth place which I was really happy with.
So not a bad start really, the illness got me a little down, but some good speed gave me some half decent results.
It was at the second World Cup where my season landed on its head - literally! I got taken out by another rider in an early round of racing and crashed onto my left ankle. As soon as I landed it felt boiling hot which is never a good sign! After arriving home it was diagnosed I had some ligament damage in my left ankle and foot. I took two weeks off, strapped it up and continued racing! Mistake number 1.
My next race was round four of the Euro Fourcross Series. At this race my foot was still so swollen that I had to wear a size 46 shoe on my left foot and a 44 on my right! I struggled all weekend but came away with seventh position, which again, all things considered was not too bad a result.
From there it was up to the home race - Fort William World Cup. The foot still was not anywhere near right, but this was a race not to be missed and after a sixth and 52nd in the World Cup so far, I needed to get my campaign back on track. My ankle was continuing to give me some real grief and fifteenth in qualifying really showed that. Below par riding due to less power in my left leg. Tough times. Things got even worse that evening. I won the first race, but in the second race came back from a bad start to take second place only to get a rear puncture. I limped the bike home and held onto second to transfer me through to the quarter final. We raced back to the start, got my spare wheel in but it took a little time and I had to go straight onto the start gate without riding the bike.
Well the gears were not quite right and I spent a lot of the run clicking between gears trying to get good drive. It didn't happen and I went out in the quarters and fifteenth position for the evening. Again all things considered and there were some positives to take from it.
So finally we went from Fort William straight to Willingen in Germany for the European Fourcross Championships. I'm not going to go on about it too much, but my ankle really flared up and gave me a lot of pain during the weekend. I raced badly - eighteenth position and came home straight afterwards. Enough was enough and I came home to get some treatment on my ankle.
So since returning home I have missed the World Cup round in Leogang and the National round at Redhill, but it has been the best time ever. I have been working with a physio from Birmingham City Football Club - which is a real problem as I am a Wolves fan, but joking aside it has been an amazing couple of weeks. We have used alot of different treatments and I am now back in training and focusing all my efforts on four races in the remainder of this season. My comeback race will be Val Di Sole World Cup at the end of July. Then I will be all out to retain my British fourcross Championship in August. Finally I will be looking to end my 2010 season with a bang at the final World Cup in Windham, USA and the World Championships in Mont St Anne, Canada.
The injury has really ruined my mid season but has given me a really good focus and training plan for the rest of the season.
I'll keep you updated with the progress,
Cheers,
