Summer is finally here so it is time to dig out your shorts, sunglasses and short sleeved jerseys. For long summer rides, picking the right jersey is essential for comfort and performance. Follow our buying tips to find the right jersey for you.
Material
A summer cycling jersey has to keep you cool and comfortable and the materials it’s made out of will play a big role in this. Look for technical fabrics that wick moisture away and vented back and side panels that will enhance breathability. In the UK or for with long descents, windproof panels on the front can increase versatility. If you are going for a retro look, merino wool can be extremely comfortable to ride in also.
Fit
The fit and sizing of cycling jerseys vary massively. For example, Italian manufacturers are notorious for their small sizing. A genuine cycling cut will have a dropped tail. This is important for keeping your lower back covered when you’re bent forwards on the bike and for making the pockets easily accessible. Aero or race cut jerseys will be tighter, with sleeves that cling to your arms and a low cut neckline. More relaxed cut jerseys won’t be quite as figure hugging and will usually have a full collar. It’s important that you try jerseys on to get the right fit for you. A fit that isn’t quite right or rubs will drive you mad over the course of a long ride.
Zip
Cycling jerseys tend to offer three different zip lengths. 1/2 length zips tend to be about 6-7 inches, 3/4 length come down to your belly button and full length open up the whole way. Which you pick is largely down to personal preference although the cooling effect of fully unzipping on a long hot climb can be blissful. Look for quality zips made of stainless steel or plastic, as they will be exposed to lots of corrosive sweat and make sure you wash them straight after riding. Hidden zips may look good but then can be more prone to snagging and can be tricky to open and close while riding.
Pockets
The standard for cycling jerseys is three rear pockets. Made out of stretchy fabric it’s amazing what you can carry in them and, if well placed and the jersey is well fitted, you should easily be able to access them while riding. Pocket capacity does vary a bit, so check if you tend to pack a lot. A secure zipped pocket can be a big plus for cash, phone or keys and some brands even offer dedicated pump pockets.
Gripper
A silicon gripper on the hem can make a big difference to how well the tail of the jersey stays in place while you are riding and is definitely worth having.
Reflective decals
If you are regularly out riding on the road you should be choosing bright colours and ideally reflective decals or piping, particularly for the early mornings or evenings. It is possible now to get jerseys with entire panels made of highly reflective materials.
Base layer
A cycling jersey is only as good as the base layer underneath it. A base layer should facilitate the wicking process and ensure that there is no moisture next to your skin. In summer conditions, a mesh vest is hard to beat.
Mixed days
Unfortunately in the UK, a summer’s ride that starts under blue skies can quickly deteriorate into cold and wet conditions, especially in upland areas. In such mixed conditions you will need some flexible clothing to complement your short sleeved jersey. You should stash some arm warmers and a lightweight gilet in your pockets whenever the conditions are slightly questionable.
