A jam-packed weekend of racing saw the junior riders do battle in Wales, the under-23 men shine at the Stars of the South West road race, and the Youth Circuit Series conclude in Lancaster.
Junior Men’s National Road Series – Junior Tour of Wales
Tomos Pattinson (Wales) was crowned the winner of the Junior Tour of Wales after four scintillating days of racing across the country in round eight of the Junior Men's National Road Series.
Pattinson finished just 14 seconds ahead of second placed Liam O’Brien (Tofauti Everyone Active), while Cormac Nisbet (Zappi Racing Team) took third on the podium.
Seb Grindley (MAS Design – Fenshaw Howes) also rode incredibly well over the four days, winning the young rider’s jersey and finishing second in the points competition behind teammate Jed Smithson. Bryn Lawrence (Anexo Group Race Team) secured the King of the Mountains jersey ahead of Nisbet and Pattinson as Tofauti Everyone Active was the overall team winner.
Pattinson kicked off the racing with a storming ride in the mountain time-trial on stage one, before finishing in second place on stage two's Brecon to Black Mountain road race as Nisbet took a solo victory seven seconds clear of Pattinson.
Stage three’s circuit race saw Smithson take the win in a sprint finish ahead of Pattinson, before CiCLE Classic winner Ben Marsh (Wales) took the fourth stage win after a fantastic solo effort.
Nisbet won the final stage up Tumble Mountain in Abergavenny in a tense battle for the overall win, but Pattinson’s fourth place was enough to secure the winners jersey. Ryan Williams (BCC Race Team) and O’Brien finished second and third on the stage.
The riders will next take to the startline for the ninth round of the series at the 360cycling North West Junior Race on Sunday 24 September.
Men’s Under-23 National Road Series – Stars of the South West
David Hird (ROKiT-SRCT) sprinted to victory in the fourth and final round of the Men’s Under-23 National Road Series.
Hird claimed a sensational win at the Stars of the South West race in Tiverton, with Leo White (Reflex Racing) taking second and James Wordsworth (Cycling Sheffield) coming in third, respectively.
The 130km race saw attacks from the start with an active peloton making for some exciting racing. A small group managed to break away with only a short distance to the finish and stayed clear, with Hird winning the sprint from the bunch.
George Wood (Cycling Sheffield) secured the overall victory in the final round of the series, finishing in 15th place on the day, after a fantastic showing throughout the season.
360cycling North West Youth Tour
The final round of the Youth Circuit Series took place at the 360cycling North West Youth Tour, based at Lancaster University.
After three hotly-contested stages, the Youth B Boys event was won by national youth circuit champion Finlay Storrie (Maindy Flyers CC), with teammates Daniel Davies (Maindy Flyers CC) second and Steffan King (Maindy Flyers CC) third, while Melanie Rowe (Deeside Thistle CC) took the victory in the Youth B Girls category, ahead of Peggy Knox (ViCiOUS VELO) in second and Katie Robertson (Clifton CC) in third.
The Youth A Boys event was won by Jamie Stewart (Cystic Fibrosis Race), with Harry Hudson (Matlock CC) second and David Gaffney third. Finally, Ella Tandy (Solihull CC) was the winner of the Youth A Girls event, ahead of national youth circuit champion Abigail Miller (Clifton CC) in second and Rebecca Gardiner (Lee Valley Youth Cycling Club) in third.
