Riding for his new 2014 team for the first time, Alex Paton (Pedal Heaven RT) gave them a great New Year gift when the 23-year-old Dover-based rider raced to victory ahead of his old team-mate Michael Butler (GWB Activ).

Conditions were muddy at the Bethlem Hospital course in South London, although the rain held off to avoid further degrading the course.

It was Paton’s third victory in the London League following wins in round six and round 12, and while Butler was second, third spot went to Arctic SRAM’s Darren Barclay.

44-year-old Vicious Velo rider Kevin Knox won the supporting race for veterans, juniors and women, while the Brockley-based rider held off Mark Smith (Crawley Wheelers) for the win, with junior Louis Suggest (Sigma RT) taking third.

There was another win for Vicious Velo in the women’s category, with 27-year-old Claire Beaumont beating 24-year-old Louise Mahe (Mule Bar Girls) from Sutton.

And in the youth race, Fred Wright (VC Londres) took the win ahead of Callum Mackie (Lee Valley Youth CC), while Emily Ashwood (Sutton CC) was best of the youth girls.
