Bristol cross racer John Whittington bagged his six Western League victory when he raced to victory in round 12 at Beaufort School in Gloucester.
The 25-year-old, who rides for Team Diabetes UK, was around 20 seconds clear at the end of the race after a thrilling battle.
Initially there were four riders clear on the opening lap: Whittington, Adam King (Cardiff JIF), Tom Payton (Isla Bikes) and Joe Griffiths (Strada Cycles). 18-year-old Griffiths was first to lose contact and he dropped back to battle with Peter Kench (Banjo Cycles) and Chris Herring (East London Velo).
The remaining three forged on, and with two laps to go Whittington opened up a gap on his rivals. But King hit back, closing him down with a lap to go, before Whittington attacked again to cross the line 10-20 seconds ahead, while King took second ahead of Payton.
Cycology Bikes rider Simon Snowden won the veterans race, the 40-year-old from Chippenham holding off Graham Rogerson (Army CU), while Hannah Payton (Kinesis Morvelo Project) was best of the women.
