Scoring his third win of the series, George Thompson (Sleaford Wheelers) clinched the overall Lincolnshire title with victory in the penultimate round promoted by Cottingham Coureurs at Winterton Showground.

Mark Cotton (Ellmore Factory Racing) went into the race knowing he had to finish in front of Thompson to take the destiny of the title into next month’s final round, but a fall on one of the last corners when in the lead left him to freewheel over the line in third place as Thompson took the win ahead of Gareth Whittall (Clay Cross RT).

The three leaders went clear on the opening lap, chased by Thompson’s younger brother Henry and veteran Darryl Hewson (Ellmore Factory Racing), and played a game of cat and mouse for the rest of the race.

Every time the pace slowed, junior Henry Thompson pulled his way back up to the trio and at one point went off the front, but his efforts took a toll and he dropped back to eventually finish behind Hewson in fifth place.

The leading three were still together at the bell with George Thompson first to make a move, but Cotton forced his way back in front by bunny-hopping two planks at the top of an embankment for the first time as the others dismounted, until his front wheel slipped away as he attacked a corner approaching the finish.

George Thompson needed no second bidding and the Sleaford 19-year-old raced past to celebrate a hard-earned victory, three seconds clear of Whittall.

Victory in the youth race put Max Williamson (Lincsquad) in an unassailable position as overall champion.
