Lee Williams (Gateway Racing) used his mountain bike experience to come out triumphant in the Welsh round five.

In his first league outing of the season, Williams lead from the start and was a convincing winner of the main race of the Beacons 'Cross on very wet and windy circuit.

He rode the muddy climbs where others ran, and relentlessly extended his lead over a chasing trio of riders which included CC Abergavenny riders Tim Davies and Joe Lally and David Thomas (Cycle-tec).

These were the only riders, to finish on the same lap as Williams, in a field that included Gruff Lewis (Metaltek/Knights of Old).

Davies took an impressive second place and also first veteran and Lally came home third.

Returning to racing after injury, Lily Matthews took victory in the women's race and Towy Rider Matthew Thorne took an impressive victory in the junior category.

Williams said afterwards: “It turned out to be a good race for me, due to the conditions I was scared of getting a mechanical so pushed on early in the race and got a gap by the end of the first lap.

“From then on I just kept extending it really, I didn’t feel that fit jumping out of the corners but felt strong on the more difficult sections.

“My next race is the National Trophy next weekend in Southampton and then I will just ride whichever races that fit into my training before the National Championships in January.

“All my training this year is building up to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow where I am hoping to compete.”
