Stuart Wearmouth (MTS Cycles) took his fourth victory of the CXNE Rat Race series in convincing style riding away from his rivals from the first lap.

The disused venue of Gypsies Green velodrome provided a gladiatorial setting for CXNE Round 7 at South Shields.

Wearmouth (MTS) drew level in the league standings with the absent Tony Fawcett (Scott UK) as he dominated the event with a two minute win over former team mate Alan Nixon (Blackhawk Bikes) who led in the next four riders with a little over 30 seconds between them.

First away from the gun, Wearmouth looked to have the event sewn up in the first lap until Carl Donaldson (GS Metro) took it upon himself to chase and almost bridged a ten second gap halfway round the first of 12 laps.

The sight simply inspired Wearmouth to turn the wick up using his bike handling skills to bunny hop the hurdles to increase his lead.

He pulled away from what turned out to be a race long scrap between Nixon, Donaldson, James Alder (Velo 29), and Colin Ash (Cestria CC).

Nixon held second place as Ash and then Alder held his wheel while Donaldson paid heavily for his start and by the start of lap seven, had Nixon breathing down his neck, finishing the lap two seconds down and was passed a lap later by Ash and Alder.

By the last lap Wearmouth had the victory sewn up Nixon claimed second and Alder left Ash to claim third.

The day opened with 80 riders contesting the combined Vets/Women and Juniors event which proved to be the most exciting of the day.

The natural amphitheatre style of the venue meant that spectators were privy to the majority of the excitement with the race lead changing continuously throughout the 40 minutes.

Last week’s winner Tony Glover retired early in the race due to a mechanical leaving five riders to battle it out for the places.

Kenny Johnson and Dicky Noble were involved heavily throughout but eventually had to settle for third and fourth.

Matt Denby and Morgan Donnelly pulled away from the rest with two laps to go and battled to the line in a sprint finish with Denby the victor by half a second.

Matty Worton rode an excellent race to finish seventh overall and first junior and Sarah Murray won the ladies, leading from the gun.
