Reigning National Trophy Series champion and current leader of this year’s series, Paul Oldham (Hope Factory Racing) secured victory in round 11 of the CXNE Rat Race Series, staged at Temple Park 24 hours ahead of it hosting the fourth round of the National Trophy.
The 35-year-old from Colne in Lancashire (pictured) made the trip to the North East early and rode to a comfortable victory over a string of CXNE Series regulars as he perfected his form ahead of the prestigious event the following day.
Last year Oldham was second on the Saturday in Temple Park as a host of Belgian riders took part, but they were absent this year – and Oldham’s form is considerably better this season.
Oldham had North East league regular Tony Fawcett (Scott UK) for company on the first lap, but soon ploughed on alone and maintained a steady pace to take a controlled victory.
While Fawcett battled on and was in no man’s land for much of the race, the battle for third gave the spectators some cracking entertainment. Stuart Wearmouth (MTS Cyclesport) and Rob Partridge (Endura Racing) battled for the final podium spot for most of the race, with each one taking a slight lead as the other changed bikes at the pits.
But in the end, the only difference was Wearmouth’s better cross ability on the last half lap where he rode well through a muddy section, but Partridge wasn’t far behind.
Afterwards, Paul Oldham said: “If the National Trophy tomorrow goes like today, I’ll settle for that - it went well. It was quite muddy because although it was frosty early on it thawed out, but it’s due to freeze again tonight, so we will have to see.
“But whatever happens it will be cut up for the seniors in the afternoon. A lot of the course will be different for the National Trophy so it doesn’t get too chewed up, otherwise it would be a running race.
“Tony Fawcett rode well today, but I was just a case of getting a race in and getting my eye in for the Trophy. I didn’t race last weekend so it was good to brush off the cobwebs and have a race ahead of tomorrow.”
And in the race for veterans, women and juniors, GS Henley’s Mike Simpson took the win ahead of North Hampshire RC’s Will Girvan, while the fastest of the women was GB ace Annie Last (Micra) who came in tenth overall, while top junior was Dylan Kerfoot-Robson, in eighth.
