Round one victor Matthew Webber (London Phoenix) proved his opening win in the Elmy Cycles Eastern League was no fluke when he stormed to victory in round three, the Hoggenburg Cross, at the Redbridge circuit in Essex on Saturday.
The 38-year-old London-based rider crossed the line 30 seconds clear of his nearest rival, but his victory was no easy ride as the tough course took its toll on a number of the riders.
With a mixture of wooded sections and tricky off-camber areas and berms, the course caused many riders to skid or even come off – including Webber.
“I had a very bad start and couldn’t get my foot clipped in. I started 10 or 12 places back and had to fight my way back up to the front,” he said afterwards.
“I had a couple of mishaps because there were some tough off-camber sections that caused a few problems for a lot of people, and I came off the bike there, and dislodged my chain in another little slide somewhere else.”
Webber eventually managed to eke out a narrow lead, and by the finish had got 30 seconds over his nearest rival, XRT-Elmy Cycles rival Ross Tricker in his first ride in the league this season, while Elmy Cycles Eastern League leader Hayden Wood (unattached) was third, another 40 seconds off the pace.
“It was a good challenging course with a lot of tricky sections, and a good mix of wooded sections and gravelly berms,” added Webber.
“I rode the first round of the Eastern League at Basildon a couple of weeks ago and won it, and I also rode the first round of the London League last week although I wasn’t so successful.
“I live in East London but I’m from Suffolk originally, so I’m a bit torn between the two really. I might ride a few rounds in both leagues and see how I go. I want to get a good ranking for the nationals, so as long as I’m getting good results that’s what matters to me.”
In other categories, Team GWR’s evergreen ace Dave McMullen won the veterans/women’s support race, covering five laps of the course in 36-37 and winning by a similar margin to Webber in the senior race.
Iceni Velo rival Phil Buick held on to the league leadership with second place, 29 seconds down, while third spot went to Tim Butler (Ipswich BC), 1-11 off the pace of McMullen who was riding his first Elmy Cycles Eastern League round this season.
And first woman home was junior was Bryony Board (Lee Valley Velo), 52 seconds ahead of rival Emma Johnson (XRT-Elmy Cycles).
