Event: 15 January 2012
Report: Snowdon Sports/Andrew Whitehouse

Senior Men: Liam Killeen bounced back from the disappointment of missing out on the National Championship title last weekend when he took victory in the Senior Men's race.

The Giant rider from Malvern crossed the line well ahead of the chasing pack, while Jody Crawforth (Hargroves Cycles) took second and Paul Oldham (Hope Factory Racing) third. That result means that Oldham wins the overall series from Crawforth, while top Under-23rider Steve James (Hargroves Cycles) finishes third overall.

Oldham did well to take third spot, having fallen off his bike on an off-camber section and got course marking tape wrapped around his neck, which left him winded and down the field. But he battled back to ensure he defended his lead in the series.

Killeen dominated the race from the start. By the start of the second lap he was around 15 seconds up on Oldham and Crawforth, while Nick Craig (Scott UK) was another ten seconds off the pace and behind him Grant Ferguson (Boardman Elite) and Lewis Craven (Wheelbase) were not far off.

Crawforth moved up to second on lap three, while Craig consolidated third with Oldham suffering his mishap and dropping back.Killeen’s lead had grown to around 30 seconds 30 minutes into the race, and while Crawforth and Craig battled on Oldham had recovered and got to within around 15 seconds.

Down the field, leading Under-23 rider Steve James smashed his rear mech in the mud and had to run back to the pits, dropping well down the field. But he continued on, and gained enough points to preserve his lead in the Under-23 category and move up to third overall.

At the bell Killeen was 41 seconds ahead, while Crawforth attacked alone when Craig suffered a slight slip, and meanwhile Oldham was right on his wheel and halfway round the final lap Oldham overtook Craig into third.

After the race, Andy Whitehouse spoke to the top two riders in the series:

Paul Oldham: “Winning (the series) today was a nice consolation for the result last week. Everyone was saying I've got a fourteen point advantage over Jody so the series was a done deal but if Jody had won today I would have had to get third so it was easier to lose to be honest. It was a good race but I got caught up with the tape and a post on the off camber section early on and winded myself and it took me a while to recover but I felt I was riding stronger as the race went on but there was no way I could have beat Liam today, he was awesome. I lost contact with Nick and Jody for quite a while because of my crash but I did catch them as the race went on.”

Jody Crawforth: “Second both in the race and the series overall but it was going to take a miracle for me to take the series today! It may have been different if the European guys had come over and Paul had had a bad day. I enjoyed the course but it really slippery in places, the off camber section was OK but I was slipping about a bit on there. I crashed on the first lap and Liam got away but I don't think I was ever going to catch him the way he was riding today. On the last lap I decided to nail it through the woods and try and drop Nick, he had a small slip there and I pressed on and got a gap and I didn't want to lose second place so I put my head down. I was fairly happy with my result at the Nationals and today was good. Now I've just got to keep my form for the World Champs.

Meanwhile, Steve James wrapped up the Under-23 series, despite a day of misfortunes. His lead in the series, which he has dominated, was such that he could afford the off day. He too spoke to Andy Whitehouse afterwards:

Steven James: "I've won the Under 23's overall and got third overall in the seniors as well so it's a great way to end the series. I broke the rear mech - just one of those days. The block was full of mud and when I changed up it took the rear mech into the wheel then I had a stick get caught up and did the same thing. A bit unlucky to break a bike twice, but it didn't affect my overall position and that was the main goal for today. Winning last week at the National champs and today was the goal for me this season and winning both was a massive achievement for me. It's been a good seven days and I'm really proud of winning both titles. I'm going to Holland next week to race the World Cup and get any problems ironed out for the World Championships and I'm think I can do well there, I'm feeling pretty confident for a good result.

Women: Louise Robinson helped Stourbridge CC secure a one-two in the final round of the National Trophy, winning the women’s race by a comfortable margin after a masterclass from the experienced rider.

Three times the national champion, Robinson – now 47 and from Ludlow – won by around a minute and a half from her team-mate and fellow Ludlow resident Isla Rowntree, herself a veteran of 42 years and also a three-time winner of the national championship.

Robinson was the only one of the main contenders who didn’t fall on a muddy day in Shrewsbury, and she showed her skill as she steadily eased out her winning margin lap by lap, while behind her the riders struggled.

By the second lap, Robinson had already shaken off the attentions of Rowntree and the rest, and was 15 seconds ahead of a chasing trio of Rowntree, Amy Roberts (For Viored) and Delia Beddis (Vicious Velo), whilst soon-to-be Series winner Hannah Payton (Kinesis Morvelo Project) was seventh, knowing she only had to stay out of trouble to win the series.

The next time round, Robinson had mercilessly doubled her lead, and at the bell her advantage was around a minute and a half.

After the race, a relieved Hannah Payton spoke about winning the series:

Hannah Payton: “I've had a really good season this year, with a win in the juniors at the Nationals and winning the series today it’s been a good couple of weeks. I didn't have the best ride today I'm still trying to shake of a cold I've had since before Christmas so I did what I needed to do. I'm going to take a couple of weeks off now to recover and just go and ride my bike for fun.”

Junior Men: Series winner Joe Moses (Paul Milnes-Bradford Olympic RT) finished on a high, winning round six to make it three victories from the six rounds.

The Bradford 17-year-old was one of five riders who tussled for much of the race, and he only eventually won by around 15 seconds from Cycleshack rival Alex Welburn, the 17-year-old from Burton on Trent, who pipped him to the silver medal at the previous week's National Championships.

Third spot went to Preston-based Tom Armstrong of Wheelbase, who has finished the season strongly and who had actually led the race for the first few laps. However, he couldn't make that ealry lead stick and the rest of the top contenders were never far behind.

On the third lap when the leaders came into view Armstrong had obviously had a problem on the back of the course, and it was now Moses who led the front group, while Armstrong and Welburn were just off the pace. Meanwhile, around 15 seconds back on them were the Hargroves Cycles pair of Matt Hargroves and Harry Franklin.

With two laps to go it was Welburn’s turn to hit the front, but he never really dropped Moses, and Armstrong was only around ten seconds off the pace in third. Moses (pictured above) pulled his rival back on the tarmac sections, meaning that he got a small gap on the final lap and held on for the win.

As he got his breath back at the finish, the winner explained how he finally sealed the win:

Joe Moses: “I came here to win today and to get the series overall. Alex (Wellburn) was a lot better than me on the technical sections, but I found I got get a decent gap on him on the flatter, faster sections on the course. On the penultimate lap I managed to get a gap on him and he couldn't get back. I'm travelling out to Holland next week for World Cup and then I've got the World Champs so it’s going to be a busy few weeks!”

Veteran 40 Plus: Team Jewson’s Darren Atkins took victory in the final round of the National Trophy, holding off series winner Jim Bryan (Zepnat RT) by around 30 seconds. Atkins, 42 and from Kenilworth, looked determined to take the win from the gun and hit the front almost immediately, opening up a lead of around ten seconds over the chasing pack by the end of the first lap.

Bryan was driving a chase group which also included Wheelbase team-mates Noel Clough and Chris Young, but Atkins’ pace was proving too much and he steadily pulled away.

Bryan, Clough and Young eased clear of the rest of the chasers, but Young fell on an off-camber section of the muddy course, effectively ending his hopes of chasing down Atkins.

With two laps to go Atkins had 20 seconds over Bryan and Clough, while Young was another ten seconds off the pace, and they held these positions to the end.

The result meant that Bryan, 40 and from Matlock in Derbyshire, took the series by 20 points from Atkins, while Clough held on to third spot by holding off Young, who was just four points behind and aiming to snatch the final podium spot away from his colleague. For Bryan it completed a notable Series and National Championships double in his first year in this ever-competitive category.

With three wins from the six rounds, runner-up Darren Atkins paid the price for a poor start to the season, when he was fourth in both rounds one and two. After the race, he spoke to Andy Whitehouse about his early struggles and about rumours that he is to retire:

Darren Atkins: “I'm pleased with that. I rode well last week (at the National Championships) but the course didn't really suit me and Jim (Bryan) had the power for it, but I knew today would be totally different. I've ridden this course a few times so I knew what to expect. I decided to go from the gun and get a gap which worked and that put the others under pressure. It’s the type of course that if you get a bit of a lead it’s really difficult for the others to get back because it was so slippy and tricky. If I'd have been in better shape mentally for the opening two rounds I may have got the series: I was ok physically but things were so busy at work I think I was just so tired, but that’s life. I won the series last year so yeah I don't mind too much getting second. As for quitting......no way, it’s hard to plan for the whole season but I love racing ‘Cross and it’s great to see everyone.

Former National Champion Noel Clough has enjoyed his best season since winning that title in 2009 and he too reflected on the 2011-12 campaign after the race:

Noel Clough: “I'm very happy with third place both in the race today and overall. I wasn't happy with my race last week at Ipswich: I didn't ride up to my usual standards but today I rode a lot better. The course changed from first thing this morning when we went out compared to the race. The sun has really warmed it up, it was dry this morning and now it’s a total nightmare. It was a race where you had to really concentrate otherwise you'd be off. Third overall was on offer today and both myself and Chris (Young) knew it, so I had to just get on with it and beat him.”

Veteran 50 Plus: London Fire Brigade CC rider Mick Bell took victory in the final round at Shrewsbury and with it clain the overall series win with only his second victory of the six events. Bell, 50 and from Chipstead in Surrey, won the opening round, but was forced to take a back seat as Team Jewson’s Steve Davies won the next four on the bounce,.

But because Davies didn’t ride that first event, Bell was still at the top of the standings table at the start of the day and knew that the series would go to himself or Davies, if either won the race. No doubt fired up by his unexpected win against Davies at the previous week's National Championships, Bell rode like a man posessed.

The two riders were locked in battle for much of the race, but Davies fell on an off-camber section with two laps to go, and Bell powered away to make the most of his chance and take the win and with it, the series too. That left Davies, the 51-year-old Devon rider, to reflect on a dramatic downturn in his fortunes which deprived him of two titles he seemed odds on to win only just over a week before.

Meanwhile Mick Davies, the 52-year-old Pedal Power Loughborough rider from Lichfield, took third spot after outwitting Peter Harris (Pearce Cycles) who was fourth.

The winner admitted later that he had approached the race with aggressive intent:

Mick Bell: “That wasn't my usual style of racing but I knew Steve (Davies) would want to drive it today so I had to race that way. Steve’s been a fantastic competitor all year and I think I was lucky he didn't ride the first round at South Shields. I had no answer to him at Bradford but today was my race. Two titles in seven days is amazing, I really wanted the National title and winning the series title is really the icing on the cake for me.

Youth Categories: Series winner Jack Ravenscroft (Solihull CC) secured victory in the final round at Shrewsbury, crossing the line around half a minute ahead of his nearest rival to secure his fourth victory in the six-race series.

He held off Billy Harding (Paul Milnes RT) for the win, while Harding was just ahead of Dylan Kerfoot-Robson (Rhos on Sea CC) in third.

Ravenscroft started quickly and hit the front on the opening lap while a group of around eight chasers formed. By the second lap he was 20 seconds ahead, while early chaser James Shaw (Heanor Clarion) slipped and dropped back to around sixth before getting back on his way.

Tom Franklin (Hargroves Cycles) went second after Shaw’s misfortune, but the rest of the chasing pack were not far behind including Bradford‘s Billy Harding, Denbighshire’s Kerfoot-Robson and Solihull CC’s Dan Fox.

Ravenscroft was around 40 seconds up on Harding and Franklin as the bell sounded, but by the finish Kerfoot-Robson and Shaw had stepped up, with the Welsh rider taking third spot.

In the Under-16 girls race there was a thrilling finish, with Buxton 14-year-old Sarah Lomas (Matlock CC) taking the overall series win by just three points after taking second in round six on Sunday.

Abby-Mae Parkinson (RST Racing) won the final race, but Lomas’s sixth spot was enough to give her a three-point win (173), while previous series leader Jessica Wilkinson (Birkenhead North End CC) was a lap down in fifth and dropped too many points.

Maidstone’s Dan Tullett (Hargroves Cycles) won the Under-14 boys race by around two and a half minutes from Kingston Wheelers’ Anthony Anderson, while Charlotte Broughton (Leicestershire RC) stormed to victory in the Under-14 girls. Both Tullett and Broughton have won the series comfortably.
