REPORTS

OVER-40 MEN

National Trophy Series leader Jim Bryan (Zepnat RT) won the over-40s national title with a strong performance at the National Championships in Ipswich on Saturday.

Bryan, who leads the series with three wins from the five rounds so far, was aiming for the win to boost his chances of taking the double – and he did not disappoint, winning by 24 seconds from Team Jewson’s Darren Atkins while 49-year-old Chris Young (Wheelbase) was third.

Pedalsport CC’s Mike Young led into the first corner, but by the time the leaders had reached the hurdles Bryan had hit the front with Atkins, and it was to stay that way for the duration of the race.

Noel Clough (Wheelbase) was just behind the leading duo in third, while Greg Simcock (Corley Cycles), Mike Young and Chris Young were all close behind as they approached the end of the first lap.

After they passed the pits on lap two the same three led, but Chris Young was by now up to fourth spot and pushing hard, just four seconds behind Clough and only eight behind the leaders, while Simpson was only a second behind Young.

Exiting the woods, Simpson slipped and dropped a couple of places before getting back up to speed, but Young powered on. By lap three he had overhauled Clough into third spot and gone in search of the leaders.

But Atkins and Bryan were pulling out a good lead, now 13 seconds ahead of Young, while Clough and Simpson were just four seconds behind.

Bryan put the hammer down on lap four and opened a small gap on Atkins, gaining six seconds by the hurdles, while Young and Clough were another 20 off the pace.

Bryan went on to win by 24 seconds, with Chris Young took third, exactly a minute down on Bryan, sprinting to bronze ahead of teammate Clough in a thrilling finish. They came into the final straight side by side, but Young outpaced his team-mate to take the last medal and gold in the Vet 45 class, the 48 year old demonstrating his seemingly evergreen fitness.

Rider reaction

Jim Bryant: "I was confident of winning today, I had really good form over the Christmas period and this last week I've really looked after myself ready for today. I came here yesterday to have a look at the course and it was bone dry and my heart sunk a bit. I've had muddy races coming into today and I'd got good horsepower and I knew I'd got the strength but it was a thinking race, I had to keep digging in small efforts it wasn't just a continual effort so I was a little bit concerned.

During the early part of the race there was Darren (Atkins) and myself and every decent effort we put in we knew we were dropping riders but I got a concerned because it would be down to the two of us and come down to the last few corners but I put in my efforts on all the climbs to try and make him hurt and kept putting little efforts in during the race but on the climb across the back I put in a big effort and got 10 bike lengths and went full gas through the pits and just kept things smooth for the rest of the race.

I kept hurting myself to the line but I knew if I was doing that to myself I'd be hurting Darren as well. There was no pressure on me but when Nick (Craig) said we wouldn't be defending the Vets title I started to feel the pressure, we were going to give Nick a good race and what happened, happened but when he decided to concentrate on the seniors it put the pressure on me which is something I've never had to deal with before."

Darren Atkins: "I was confident going into the race, I felt really healthy today, eased up this week, took a few days off work and had no problems at all, but Jim was just too strong today, I was on his wheel when he decided to jump but I just couldn't hold it, I had to back off a bit when he did go otherwise i'd have gone bang in a big way and dropped even further back. I had to accept I'd reached my limits today. I had a chest infection five weeks ago but I was pretty sure i was over that so it wasn't that. I've got second three times now so I think that will do me, I've had enough now."

Chris Young: “I set off pretty well got into third place – my brother was leading. Tried to start as best I could but after about half a lap I just started going backwards – them other guys (Bryan and Atkins) are a lot faster. Then I settled into a bit of a rhythm. Saw Noel (Clough) getting popped a bit. When I got to him I said “Come on, we’re teammates – let’s work together.” We did that a bit but I think we were both battling with each other to stay away and we were both really tired. Then this other guy (Michael Simpson) caught us but unluckily for him he had a bike change with a lap to go otherwise it could have been a different story. And then Noel got a gap on me but I pegged him back. Then it was a sprint finish – he led out but I managed to just get around him. I really pleased – third in the race and first over 45. I’m 48 years old and giving these guys some lessons – there’s some young kids in my race now, you know, forty year olds!”

OVER 50 MEN

Mick Bell (London Fire Brigade CC) secured the 2012 National Cyclo-Cross Championship’s over-50s title in thrilling fashion when he survived a last lap crash to take the win by just a few feet from defending champion Steve Davies (Team Jewson) at Chantry Park in Ipswich on Saturday.

The two had been locked together for much of the race but they came together on the final circuit, and it was Bell who got back on his bike quickest and crossed the line to take the victory, while disappointed Davies trailed in second, around six seconds back, and Mick Davies (Pedal Power Loughborough) took third, a minute off the pace

The shape of the race had been decided early on. Davies and Bell hit the front within a few hundred yards of the start and they were stuck to each other like glue throughout, taking turns at the front but never quite managing to shake the other off.

Around four seconds behind them Dave McMullen (GWR Team) was tussling with Mick Rowson (RVO Racing), while Mick Davies was also staying up with the leaders.

As the race progressed the two leaders continued to trade blows, while behind Mick Rowson's early challenge faded and Mick Davies passed both Rowson and McMullen and took up residence in third. The Pedal Power Loughborough rider then began to plug away for in an attempt to bridge to the leaders. Behind him McMullen held fourth ahead a gaggle of riders.

Back up at the head of the race the stalemate continued until the final lap when Mick Bell upped the pace slightly as he and Steve Davies headed into the wooded section. Bell led into every corner from then on, while never quite managing to drop Davies.

In a last ditch effort to retain the title, Davies managed to get back on level terms with his rival at the final corner but the pair clashed and fell with the finish in sight. Agonisingly for Davies it was Bell who managed to pick himself up first and sprinted full-out for a well deserved and hard fought win.

Rider Reaction

Mick Bell: "I always knew I could beat him (Steven Davies), but I didn't expect to be on the floor with him with 100 metres to go. I knew if it came down to a sprint I could outsprint him for the win, it was up to him to drop me not the other way round but to be fair Steve did most of the work today so I'm so happy with the win, this is the one I really wanted."

Steven Davies: "Today was one of those days but my congratulations to Mick with the win. It was a good race today and he's give me a good run throughout the year. It was always going to be a toss up between us and on the day he rode better then me. Bit of desperation coming into the final bend, both of us wanted to get the finishing straight first and we collided but Mick got up before me and that was the end of the race for me. Good day and a good course so roll on next year."

Mick Davies: "I very pleased with third place, I didn't feel too good before the start so to get third was a pleasant surprise. I was pleased to get round to be honest the way I was feeling. I was quite close to them (Bell & Davies) early on but I just hadn't got it today to close the gap down. So I had to back off a bit, hang in there and settle for third."

UNDER 16 MALE

Solihull CC’s Jack Ravenscroft took a convincing win in a typically frenetic Under-16 boys race at the National Championships in Chantry Park, Ipswich, holding off Heanor Clarion rival James Shaw for the win.

Ravenscroft crossed the line 25 seconds ahead of Shaw, who won a close sprint for second spot from Paul Milnes-Bradford Olympic’s Billy Harding, who was just one second behind in third following an impressive late charge.

Hargroves Cycles’ Tomas Franklin took up the early pace on the opening lap, leading into the first few bends, but by the end of the first lap Ravenscroft had taken over, while Shaw was battling with Franklin for second.

Ravenscroft held his rivals at a safe distance while not powering totally clear, and it was only by the final lap that victory looked to be assured. Harding had come stronger as the race progressed and had moved from sixth to third, and on the final lap was challenging for second spot, but Shaw held him off.

PCA Ciclos Uno's Sean Dunlea also had an excellent ride, tussling with Harding, Franklin and Dylan Kerfoot-Robson all race. Dunlea eventually bagged fourth with Kerfoot-Robson beating Franklin in the sprint for fifth. Franklin took consolation and a place on the podium for winning the trophy for best under 15 rider.

Rider Reaction

Jack Ravenscroft: "I'm really happy with that. It's something I've been working to all season and for it all to come together today is just brilliant. I did a lot of training over the Christmas period and I think I'm still a bit fatigued from that. I didn't feel that strong before the race but I just had to go and nail it because I wanted the title so bad. I knew I had to get an early lead to make sure of having a chance of winning because of James (Shaw) and Billy (Harding) being up there. Now I've got the National Trophy to think about next week."

UNDER-16 FEMALE

Abby-Mae Parkinson led a one-two for RST Racing Team in the Under-16 Girls race at the National Championships in Ipswich.

Parkinson rode with with team-mate Grace Garner in the early stages of the race before striking out alone, eventually crossing the line 45 seconds clear, while Garner took silver having eventually won a race long feud with Jessica Wilkinson (Birkenhead North End CC).

After working together and sharing the lead on the opening lap, Parkinson broke away from Garner on the second circuit and went on to steadily build her lead.

Wilkinson and Garner were locked together for much of the race and traded positions, while Matlock CC’s Sarah Lomas began to consolidate fourth place.

It was only on the final lap that Garner broke clear of Wilkinson and went on to win silver, while Wilkinson came home third 22 seconds behind the the RST-Trigon rider.

Rider Reaction

Abby Mae Parkinson: "I'm over the moon, I can not believe I've won. Billy texted me last night and said its a bit like Derby and I won there so I was hoping I could do well today but I never thought I'd win by the distance. I'm so happy that Grace got second as well, she's my best friend and team mate so to get a 1-2 was great."

UNDER-14 MALE

Hargroves Cycles rider Dan Tullett took a commanding victory in the Under-14 boys category at the National Championships in Chantry Park, Ipswich, on Saturday, after leading from start to finish.

Super smooth Tullett crossed the line 43 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, Condor Cycles’ David Barnes, who had been on his heels in the early stages but could not hang on to his classy rival, who is unbeaten so far this season at national level.

By the end of the first lap Tullett had opened up a lead of around 17 seconds on Barnes and Anthony Anderson (Kingston Wheelers), while Will Gascoyne (Matlock CC) and Oliver Peckover (Nottingham Clarion) were another few seconds off the pace.

At the bell Tullett had a 32 second lead, while Barnes was another 18 seconds ahead of Gascoyne in third with Anderson not far behind in fourth, and they held their positions to the line.

There was a sprint finish for fifth spot between Peckover and Ewan Grivell-Mellor (Mid-Shropshire Wheelers), which the Nottingham Clarion rider just edged.

Rider Reaction

Dan Tullett: "This was a massive target for me. I've won the National Trophy Series and now to win today is great but I couldn't have done it without the support of Pete and Barbara Hargroves and my dad."

UNDER-14 FEMALE

Pre-race favourite Charlotte Broughton (Leicestershire RC) did not disappoint as she secured a comfortable win in the Under-14 girls race at Chantry Park on Saturday.

Like Tullett in the Under-14 boys race, the talented Broughton led from start to finish and would’ve proved more than a match for many of the Under-16 riders had they been riding together as normal.

Broughton disappeared virtually from the first corner, and by the end of the first lap she was already overtaking riders from the boys race which had started a minute ahead of the girls.

She continued her effort and had overtaken about three-quarters of the boys field by the end of the race.

Meanwhile, Sophie Capewell (Lichfield City CC) and Jessica Roberts (Towy Riders) were locked in a battle for second spot behind, and were rarely separated by more than a second.

While Broughton crossed the line 2-37 ahead ahead, Capewell won the sprint for second by just three seconds with Roberts taking third.

Behind the inseperable duo of Capewell and Roberts there was a gap of 1 minute and 42 seconds to fourth placed Henrietta Colbourne of Beacon Wheelers, just seven seconds ahead of fifth placed Ria Mobbs of Welland Valley CC.

Rider Reaction

Charlotte Broughton: "I sort of expected to retain the title today but at the same time I wasn't that confident because you just don't know what going to happen in a cross race, in fact in the warm up I snapped my chain so I thought thats not a good sign. I rode off the front early on which gave me some breathing space just in case anything happened, but to win again was really good because I won as a first year Under 14 last year and I felt the pressure a bit today but I seem to ride well under pressure."

British Cycling would like to thank the organising team, officials and everyone else who helped promote this event. Our sport could not exist without the hundreds of people, many of them unpaid volunteers, who put in many hours of hard work running events, activities and clubs.
