After his win in the previous day’s Geoff Bewley Memorial, Giles Drake (Team Elite) made it a double winning weekend with a victory in round 11 of the North West League at the Marsh Tracks in Rhyl on Sunday.
Drake won led Team Elite to a 1-2-3 in the race which used a circuit which had long stretches of road as well as the more usual grassland expected in cyclo-cross races.
Drake was at the front of the race virtually throughout alongside team-mate Paul Bethell, but Bethell suffered a set-back when his chain snapped with three laps to go and he had to run back to the pits to get a spare machine.
He managed to rejoin the race, but his chance of victory had gone with Drake putting the hammer down when he was left alone at the front to maximise the advantage.
Their team-mate Peter Wilbraham had also been involved in a long battle for superiority with Zepnat Racing Team’s Peter Middleton, but he edged ahead in the closing stages as his rival tired.
In other categories, Sean Beswick (Zepnat RT) was top over-40 just ahead of Manchester Wheelers’ Mick Style, while Ray Pugh (Liverpool Mercury was fastest in the 50-55 race and Abigail Armstrong was best woman.
