Velocity WD-40’s Matt Gibson won the junior male individual pursuit on day one of the 2014 British Cycling Junior and Youth National Track Championships in Manchester.

Gibson, fresh from the UEC Under-23 and Junior European Track Championships in Portugal, defeated Joe Holt of County Cycles RT in a time of 3:27.221 on Monday.

The 18-year-old had earlier qualified fastest at the National Cycling Centre. Matthew Bostock (Manx Viking Wheels CC) took bronze in a time of 3:29.117, three seconds clear of Joseph Fry.

In the junior female category, Ellie Coster started the five-day competition with gold in the 500m time-trial.

The Bush Healthcare CRT rider narrowly beat Grace Garner, who won omnium silver for Great Britain at the European championships, by five-thousandths of a second, her time 36.189 seconds to Garner’s 36.194.

Lichfield City’s Sophie Capewell finished third in 36.254 seconds but would go on to win the under-16 female sprint competition.

The Great Britain Olympic Development Programme rider qualified fastest from a field of 13 in 12.116 seconds and went through to the final without dropping a single heat.

There she met Lauren Bate-Lowe of Sportcity Velo and continued her run with a 2-0 victory for gold.

The under-16 male sprint contest saw William Turnbull of Marton RT face Frank Longstaff (Team Terminator) in the final. Longstaff had qualified fastest in the flying 200m with an effort of 11.256 seconds to Turnbull’s 11.386.

But Turnbull, who came back from a heat down his quarter-final match against Max Bergin, was able to get the better of Longstaff in two heats to nil to take the title.

In the bronze-medal match, Longstaff’s teammate Alex Jolliffe was too strong for Jack Plumley, winning in straight heats.

The championships continue on Tuesday and conclude on Friday 8 August.
