How the points are allocated

British Cycling's are based on a system where points are awarded according to a rider's placing at the end of an event and on one of a number of sliding scales, relevant to the level/status of the event in question.

World and Olympic championships naturally reward riders with the greatest number of ranking points, with other international, continental, national and regional events each having their own points scales.

Ranking points are awarded only in UCI, UEC and British Cycling events. Please note, the term "standings" is used to denote points allocated to riders within a particular series of events and do not relate to the national BMX rankings.

The rankings year runs from 1 December until 30 November. The rankings are driven by a database of results, maintained by British Cycling and updated daily.

A rider's ranking is based on their best 12 results - i.e. if they have more than 12 results in any given year, the rankings system will be calculated only on their best 12 results.

Points allocated in international events

Although ranking points gained in Olympic, world championship, European championship and world cup events will be automatically added to a rider's rankings, please notify British Cycling of any other points you may have gained in international events.

Simply drop an email to results@britishcycling.org.uk and include details of the result, preferably including a link to the result on the event's website.

What are ranking points used for?

Ranking points allow riders to compare their results against their peers across a wide range of events rather than just one series.

Full racing licence

To gain any ranking points, a rider must hold a full racing licence at the time of the event in which they participate. Non-members, or members with only a provisional racing licence, do not qualify for ranking points. Find out more about full racing licences.
