The 2014 British BMX Series headed north to Preston in Lancashire for rounds four and five, and the British Cycling Academy riders stole the show in the championship classes.

The weather played a huge part on the racing over the weekend, with torrential rain on Saturday and drying conditions on Sunday, the track became the ninth man in many races with water spray and slippery turns.

British Cycling’s Olympic Development Academy (ODA) rider Tre Whyte wrapped up the weekend in the elite men’s class with two dominant days racing. On day one he dropped just one moto point as he headed to the final which he led out untroubled from TSM/The Works rider Dan McBride, Manchester’s Jacob Roberts and Identiti Bikes Billy Luckhurst.

Come day two, and Whyte went one better with a clean sheet of wins through the moto’s, semis and into the final on his dad Nigel’s birthday. Tre, who hails from Peckham in south London came out of gate eight like a rocket and had the race in the palm of his hand from turn one.

He flew through the short but technically demanding track, finishing five bike lengths ahead of Dan McBride again. Manchester’s Calum Strickland rounded out the podium in third after a disastrous day one.

Whyte was elated after his wins, commenting: “I’m happy with doubling up with the win both days at Preston."

In the championship women’s class Haro’s Abbie Taylor and Identiti’s Charlotte Green shared the wins. Green had the holeshot on day one and led the pack through the track into the last turn. Green, 20, had the last straight in her sights when Taylor set up an awesome move in the last turn that saw her glide past Green as they drag raced for the finish line.

After the race Taylor said: “I’m happy with my result at Preston and would like to thank my sponsors.”

Green’s team mate Joey Gough rounded out the podium with a smooth display of bike handling. On the second day’s racing Green was super determined not to miss out on the win and went bar to bar with Taylor down the first straight.

As they headed out of the first turn Green laid down the power and pulled a gap on the rest of the riders to take the win in style.

After the race Green said: “After yesterday’s race I was a little dejected but it’s great to turn things around today and take the win.”

Taylor kept the rest of the field at bay in second with Valerie Zebrokova in third.

The championship men’s class was dominated by GET Racing’s Dom Skidmore as he took top points in the class on both days.

Skidmore even won his way through to the elite men’s final on day one where he took seventh. Jimmy Orena from Ultimate BMX was the best of the rest as he pursued Skidmore over the weekend with two second places and Kieron McAvoy did the business for Buildbase by taking two third place finishes.

Other standout performances came from Preston’s GHP Factory rider Lily Brindle, who doubled up the wins on her home track in the 7-8 girls. Profile Racing and Braintree’s Ollie Rowe who took the win on day one and settled for second on day two in the 13’s, Lewis Hipkins from Derby who did an awesome double in the 14’s, Leah Clinch from Preston and GHP Factory and Braintree’s Shane Redgewell taking their first ever 20" national wins in the 15’s.

Rounds six and seven of the British BMX Series will be held in Derby on 5-6 July.
