Report: East Anglia BMX Spring Classic
Event: 28th March 2010, Royston | Source: Royston Rockets BMX Club
The opening event of the East Anglia BMX 2010 summer calendar, the Spring Classic was hosted by the Royston Rockets BMX racing Club on Sunday 28th March at their track in Royston's Burns Road. The club's members had been hard at work over the previous weeks trying to get the track into reasonable condition following the severe weather suffered over the winter and their efforts were rewarded with a fine dry day although the wind made the final straight hard work for the younger riders.
The racing attracted over 110 riders from across the region and a few from outside of the area and as this was a single event rather than part of a series, the riders raced for trophies in each of the 26 available classes from the Under 6's to the 45+.
The racing was close and very competitive and Royston's female riders got the Rockets trophy tally off to a flying start with Ella Tomsett winning in the Female 7-8yr class and Helen Nicholl taking second in the Female 25+ Cruiser class. The male riders also had a series of good results in their classes with Charlie Todd taking third in the 6 and under class whilst Royston riders packed the B Final of the 7 year-old class with Cameron Knight taking the win ahead of Will Frascoe in second, Zak Blanche Drammeh in third followed home by Josh Knight fourth, Callum Barrow fifth and Brendon Salmon in sixth. In the 8 year-old class Alfie Salmon finished in fifth just ahead of team mate Jack Todd, while the 9 year-old class was a whole pack of Rockets with James King in third, Ted Dalleywater in 4th, Marmaduke Birt claiming fifth and Alex Knight taking seventh.
The 10 year-old male class saw more good results for the Rockets with Daniel Blanche taking the win having been chased all the way by Myles Fisher who finished in second as did Aaron Dalleywater in the 11 year-old category. The male 12 year-old class saw Ethan Lewis take fourth just ahead of Matthew Harris in fifth and in the 17+ class James Handleigh, who was riding up an age, took fifth in the class B Final. The 30+ "Masters" class saw Darren Foreman take fourth, whilst Alex Shore Nye taking sixth and in the 30-39 year Cruiser class Matt Salmon took third whilst Karl Birt finished in eighth place in the Cruiser 40+ category.
The Rockets will be starting their regular Tuesday night sessions from April 20th and the first round of the East Anglia Region Summer Series starts on April 11th at Braintree. Full details of forthcoming club and regional events will be published soon on the club web site at www.roystonrockets.co.uk, or ring 01763 260959 for more information on BMX racing.
